US Government Purchases Citizens Data on Open Market; Writers File Class Action Lawsuit Against OpenAI; Dutch Government Joins US in Imposing Restrictions on Chinas Chip Making Equipment Usage

**Protecting Your Privacy: Government Purchase of Personal Data Raises Concerns**

Introduction

Summer is the perfect time to kick back, relax, and indulge in some leisurely reading. But did you know that your personal information may be up for sale on the open market? In a recent episode of Hashtag Trending, the Weekend Edition on Tech News Day, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of Barnes and Noble about the resurgence of bookstores in the digital age. However, our conversation quickly took a turn towards a more alarming topic: the government’s purchase of personal data from commercial data brokers.

Government Agencies and the Commercial Data Market

According to a partially declassified report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, several U.S. government agencies, including the FBI, Department of Defense, National Security Agency, Treasury Department, Defense Intelligence Agency, Navy, and Coast Guard, have been found to be buying vast amounts of personal information from commercial data brokers. This information includes not only location and connections, but also personal beliefs and predictive behavior.

The Risks to Privacy and Civil Liberties

The report highlights the invasive nature of the consumer data market and the threats it poses to privacy and civil liberties. By combining this commercially available information with decision-making artificial intelligence and generative AI, such as ChatGPT, the government gains access to sensitive personal information that surpasses what can be obtained through court-authorized surveillance. This presents significant risks, as it increases the government’s power to surveil its citizens outside the boundaries of the law and opens the door to potential misuse of the data. It is clear that urgent action is needed to safeguard citizens’ privacy and prevent the unlawful use of data by government agencies.

The Class Action Complaint Against OpenAI

In another case of data misuse, OpenAI, the organization responsible for developing large language models like GPT-3, is facing a class action complaint. Plaintiffs Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad have filed a suit against OpenAI, citing infringement, copyright violations, unjust enrichment, and unfair competition. The complaint alleges that OpenAI trained its language models by copying copyrighted works without consent, credit, or compensation to the authors.

OpenAI’s use of copyrighted works from sources like Smashwords.com and undisclosed book datasets raises serious concerns about the legality of the data used to train these models. It is not just OpenAI that may be implicated; many other large language models have also been trained using similar datasets. The outcome of this case could have wide-ranging implications for the entire field.

The Dutch and U.S. Crackdown on Chipmaking Equipment

In an effort to prevent China from using chipmaking equipment to bolster its military capabilities, both the United States and the Netherlands are tightening restrictions on sales of such equipment to Chinese chipmakers. The Dutch government plans to introduce new regulations that will require a licensing requirement for ASML’s second-best product line, deep ultraviolet semiconductor equipment. This move follows existing restrictions on ASML’s most advanced machines, extreme ultraviolet lithography machines.

Meanwhile, the United States is expected to go a step further by introducing a new rule that will allow restrictions on foreign equipment containing even a small percentage of U.S. parts. Licenses to export equipment to specific Chinese facilities, including SMIC, China’s largest chipmaker, are likely to be denied.

These measures reflect the escalating tensions in the global tech industry and the increasing efforts by Western countries to curb China’s technological advancements.

Reddit’s Battle with Subreddit Protests

In a battle between Reddit and its moderators, the popular social media platform has reached its breaking point. Reddit is now issuing notices to the largest subreddits that remain private, setting a deadline for them to propose reopening plans. Failure to comply may result in unspecified “further action.” The protest originated from Reddit’s plans to charge for the use of its site tools, which led many subreddits to go private in opposition.

The impact of this protest on Reddit’s engagement numbers has been significant. Traffic decreased by nearly 5% at the start of the protests, and though it has recovered to near-normal levels, the time spent on the site has declined by 16%. This decline in user activity has also affected visits to the site’s ad portal, resulting in a decrease in ad traffic.

Chief Technology Officer Michael Kagan of Nvidia Interviewed

Nvidia Builds Architecture for the 21st Century Computer

The world of computing is constantly evolving, with technology becoming smaller and more powerful. According to Michael Kagan, the CTO of Nvidia, the 21st century computer is scalable from a smartwatch all the way up to the hyperscale datacentre. Nvidia is at the forefront of building the architecture for this new era of computing, providing everything from silicon and frameworks to tuning applications for optimal execution.

Kagan, who joined Nvidia three years ago through the acquisition of Mellanox Technologies, is responsible for overseeing the architecture of all systems. This includes developing the necessary components and optimizing them for efficient performance on this modern machinery.

The Evolution Beyond Moore’s Law

Moore’s Law, coined by Gordon Moore in 1965, predicts that the semiconductor industry will be able to double the number of transistors on integrated circuits every year. However, this prediction was modified in 1975 to a doubling every two years. While chip manufacturers benefited from this doubling until around 2005, they eventually reached physical limitations that prevented further advancements.

To overcome these limitations, manufacturers found alternative ways to increase computing power. One approach was to increase the number of cores, allowing for parallel processing. Another was to improve communication between chips and processors by utilizing networks instead of shared buses. These innovations led to the creation of accelerators, specialized components that perform tasks rapidly and enhance overall performance.

In the pursuit of increasing computing power, manufacturers began focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging applications. AI processing requires a different data processing method than traditional von Neumann architecture. Neural networks, inspired by the human brain, process data by learning and recognizing patterns, allowing for solving complex problems that were previously unattainable.

The Need for a New Paradigm

AI and other advanced applications, such as digital twins, necessitated the development of a new paradigm that could accommodate the growing demand for computing performance. While software development traditionally required minimal computing power, AI demands significant compute resources for training neural networks, but fewer for inference.

Training large AI models, such as ChatGPT, requires the collaborative effort of multiple GPUs working in parallel. This not only requires massive parallel processing but also effective communication between the GPUs. Additionally, a new type of specialized chip called the data processing unit (DPU) became essential in this new era of computing.

Huang’s Law: The Acceleration of Computing

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s founder and CEO, identified a new trend in GPU-accelerated computing. According to Kagan, GPU-accelerated computing performance doubles every other year, surpassing even the expected rate of improvement. The addition of more and better accelerators, along with advances in algorithms, allows for more sophisticated data processing.

The partitioning of functions between the GPU, CPU, and DPU, interconnected by a network, further enhances computing capabilities. In fact, Nvidia’s acquisition of Mellanox introduced in-network computing, enabling data calculations as data flows through the network.

While Moore’s Law relied on transistor count to drive computing performance, Huang’s Law, based on GPU-accelerated computing, doubles system performance every other year. However, even Huang’s Law may struggle to keep up with the growing demands of AI applications, which require 10 times more computing power each year.

In conclusion, Nvidia is at the forefront of building the architecture for the 21st century computer. With advancements in GPU-accelerated computing and the development of specialized chips like the DPU, computing power continues to increase exponentially. While traditional Moore’s Law reached its physical limits, innovative approaches such as parallel processing and in-network computing have propelled computing capabilities to new heights. Study finds AI-written tweets using tools like ChatGPT are more credible than human-written text

The Rise of AI Text Generators: Can We Spot Misinformation?

AI text generators like ChatGPT, Bing AI chatbot, and Google Bard have gained significant attention in recent times. These powerful language models are capable of producing impressive pieces of writing that appear entirely legitimate. However, a new study suggests that humans might be easily fooled by the misinformation generated by these AI systems.

To investigate this phenomenon, researchers from the University of Zurich conducted an experiment to determine if people could distinguish between content written by humans and text generated by GPT-3, which was announced in 2020 (not as advanced as GPT-4 introduced earlier this year). The results were surprising, as participants could only marginally perform better than random guessing, achieving an accuracy rate of 52 percent. Determining whether a text was authored by a human or an AI proved to be a challenging task.

So, what sets GPT-3 apart? In reality, it does not truly comprehend language like we do. Instead, it relies on patterns it has learned from analyzing how humans use language. While GPT-3 is beneficial for tasks such as translation, chatbots, and creative writing, there are risks associated with its misuse, including the spread of misinformation, spam, and fake content.

According to the researchers, the rise of AI text generators coincides with another issue we currently face: the “infodemic.” This refers to the rapid spread of fake news and disinformation. The study raises concerns about the potential use of GPT-3 to generate misleading information, particularly in critical areas like global health.

The Impact of GPT-3-Generated Content

To assess the influence of GPT-3-generated content on people’s understanding, the researchers conducted a survey. They compared the credibility of synthetic tweets created by GPT-3 with those written by humans, focusing on topics known to be plagued by misinformation, such as vaccines, 5G technology, Covid-19, and evolution.

The results were surprising yet again. Participants more frequently recognized the synthetic tweets containing accurate information compared to those written by humans. Similarly, they considered the disinformation tweets generated by GPT-3 to be accurate more often than those created by humans. Thus, GPT-3 proved to be both more effective at informing and misleading people than human authors.

Moreover, participants took less time to evaluate the synthetic tweets compared to the human-written ones. AI-generated content appears to be easier to process and evaluate. However, it is important to note that humans still outperformed GPT-3 when it came to determining the accuracy of information.

Furthermore, the study revealed that GPT-3 generally adhered to producing accurate information when requested. However, there were instances where it deviated from this and refused to generate disinformation. It possesses the ability to decline the dissemination of fake content, but occasional slip-ups may occur when attempting to provide accurate information.

This study highlights our vulnerability to misinformation generated by AI text generators like GPT-3. While these systems are capable of producing highly credible texts, it is crucial for us to remain vigilant and develop effective tools to detect and combat misinformation.

Editor Notes

The findings of this study shed light on the potential dangers of AI-generated content, particularly in terms of misinformation. As technology continues to advance, it is essential for both researchers and technology companies to prioritize the development of robust systems that can accurately detect and counteract false information. Additionally, individuals must remain cautious and critical of the information they encounter, especially in areas where misinformation is prevalent, such as health and scientific topics.

OpenAI the creator of ChatGPT faces a $3 billion lawsuit for alleged unauthorized acquisition of private data in AI training

OpenAI and Microsoft Sued for Allegedly Stealing Personal Information for AI Training

OpenAI Inc., the creator of ChatGPT, has been hit with a lawsuit alongside its major backer Microsoft, accusing them of stealing personal information to train their AI models. The lawsuit was filed by sixteen pseudonymous individuals who claim that the companies collected and disclosed their personal information without proper notice or consent. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, seeks $3 billion in potential damages on behalf of millions of individuals who may have been affected.

According to the complaint, OpenAI scraped 300 billion words from the internet, including personal information, without consent. The lawsuit alleges that the companies chose to gather data without paying for it, ignoring the legal means of obtaining data for their AI models. OpenAI and Microsoft are accused of collecting, storing, tracking, and disclosing various types of personal information, putting millions at risk of having their information disclosed to strangers around the world.

The Lawsuit: Alleged Theft of Personal Information

The sprawling 157-page lawsuit claims that OpenAI stole personal information by scraping the internet without consent. The complaint highlights that the companies violated privacy laws and failed to sufficiently filter out personally identifiable information from their training models. This puts individuals at risk of having their personal information disclosed to unauthorized parties. Additionally, the lawsuit accuses OpenAI and Microsoft of risking “civilizational collapse” due to the enormous amount of information they have collected and processed in their AI products.

OpenAI is known for developing text-generating language models like GPT-2, GPT-4, and ChatGPT. Microsoft has been an advocate of this technology, integrating it into various parts of its empire, including Windows and Azure. The lawsuit heavily relies on media and academic citations to express concerns about AI models and ethics but lacks specific instances of harm caused by the defendants. As of now, neither OpenAI nor Microsoft has responded to the $3 billion lawsuit.

Scepticisms Surrounding AI and Privacy

While ChatGPT and other generative AI applications are fascinating pieces of technology, concerns about privacy and misinformation have been growing. A global movement to limit the usage of AI has emerged, with the US Congress currently debating the potential dangers of AI and its impact on creative industries and the ability to discern truth from fiction.

OpenAI’s co-founders and CEO have themselves called for stricter regulations on “super-intelligent” AIs to prevent potential catastrophic risks. The need for an agency like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee the use of AI globally has been emphasized. This skepticism has been further fueled by instances such as a court case where ChatGPT provided false supporting cases, and the recent allegations of OpenAI scraping personal information.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit claim that OpenAI misappropriated personal data in its pursuit of winning the “AI arms race.” They allege that OpenAI illegally accessed private information from individuals’ interactions with ChatGPT and integrated applications. This includes gathering data from platforms like Snapchat, Spotify, Stripe, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of prioritizing profits over its original mission of benefiting humanity, estimating ChatGPT’s expected revenue for 2023 at $200 million.

Editor Notes

This lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft raises significant concerns about privacy and the ethical use of AI. The allegations of unauthorized collection and disclosure of personal information highlight the need for strict regulations and safeguards in the development and implementation of AI technologies. It is crucial for companies to prioritize the protection of user data and obtain proper consent for data usage. OpenAI and Microsoft should address these allegations and take appropriate measures to ensure the privacy and security of individuals using their AI products.

People Tend to Trust Artificial Intelligences Misinformation More

AI Chatbots Are Spreading Disinformation: Study

Disinformation, propaganda, alternative facts—the use of biased or false information has been a longstanding strategy in politics and social engineering. However, the rise of social media and advancements in AI have amplified the practice, and recent research suggests that AI is even better at spreading disinformation than humans.

A study published in Science Advances reveals that OpenAI’s GPT-3, an AI chatbot, is highly effective at disseminating disinformation. OpenAI, founded in 2015, released GPT-3 in 2020 and granted exclusive licensing to Microsoft. The study surveyed 697 participants to determine if they could identify disinformation tweets generated by GPT-3, as well as distinguish between tweets written by AI and humans.

The Impact of GPT-3’s Disinformation

The report titled “AI model GPT-3 (dis)informs us better than humans” illustrates how GPT-3 was asked to write tweets on various topics, such as vaccines, 5G technology, COVID-19, and the theory of evolution. These subjects were specifically chosen due to their susceptibility to disinformation and public misconceptions. Twitter, with its large user base primarily engaged in news and politics, was chosen as the platform for this study.

  • The study selected Twitter because it has approximately 400 million regular users
  • Almost 20-29% of content on Twitter is generated by bots
  • This research is applicable to other social media platforms as well

Recognizing AI-Generated Tweets

Participants were then scored on their ability to recognize AI-generated tweets, with scores ranging from 0 to 1. The average score was 0.5, indicating that individuals struggled to differentiate between real and AI-generated tweets. Surprisingly, the accuracy of the information in the tweets did not significantly impact participants’ ability to identify AI-generated content.

The study concludes that advanced AI text generators like GPT-3 have the potential to significantly impact the dissemination of information. Large language models already produce text that is indistinguishable from organic content. Therefore, the emergence of more powerful models, such as GPT-4, and their impact should be closely monitored.

Concerns and Regulatory Measures

The rapid pace of generative AI development, particularly with the release of ChatGPT and GPT-4 in recent months, has sparked concerns within the tech industry. Calls for a temporary pause in AI development have arisen, emphasizing the need for regulation to prevent the misuse of AI and ensure transparency.

Additionally, the spread of AI-generated mis/disinformation and deepfakes has prompted UN Secretary-General António Guterres to advocate for an international agency, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to monitor AI’s development. Guterres warns that the proliferation of hate, lies, and misinformation in the digital space poses severe global risks, including threats to democracy, human rights, public health, and climate action.

Editor Notes

As AI continues to advance, it is crucial to address the challenges posed by disinformation and the potential harm it can cause. Reliable monitoring and regulation of AI development are necessary to safeguard individuals and society as a whole. The study’s findings highlight the urgency of this issue and emphasize the need for responsible AI practices.

Heres why Googles new Gemini AI has the potential to outperform ChatGPT

Google Building AI System to Outperform ChatGPT, Says Google DeepMind CEO

According to Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, Google is currently developing an AI system called “Gemini” that will surpass the capabilities of ChatGPT. This new system is expected to take several months to complete and could cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars. Gemini will be focused on working with text and will share many similarities with ChatGPT-4.

However, Google’s goal is not just to replicate existing AI models. The company’s engineers are incorporating techniques from AlphaGo, an AI system that famously defeated a champion in the board game Go. By integrating AlphaGo’s planning and problem-solving abilities into Gemini, Google aims to enhance the capabilities of this new AI system. The large language model capabilities will be combined with these skills to create an advanced AI system.

AlphaGo was developed using reinforcement learning, where software repeatedly attempts to solve a task and adjusts its performance based on feedback. Additionally, the Gemini project may draw ideas from other areas of AI, such as robotics and neuroscience, to further enhance its capabilities.

The announcement of Gemini took place during Google’s I/O conference. Google stated that Gemini is designed to be multimodal, with efficient tool and API integrations, and built to enable future innovations such as memory and planning. While it is still an early-stage project, Gemini has already demonstrated impressive multimodal capabilities not seen in previous models. The system will be available in various sizes and capabilities.

In April, a leaked internal document from Google raised concerns about the company losing its competitive edge in AI to the open-source community. The document mentioned the community’s ability to quickly adapt and make adjustments to their AI projects. As a response, Google removed the waiting list for its chatbot Bard, a competitor to Open AI’s ChatGPT. However, the European launch of Bard had to be delayed due to privacy concerns.

Considering the negative impact of Bard’s factual mistake during its initial demo, which caused Alphabet, Google’s parent company, to lose $100 billion in market value, it is likely that Google will take extra precautions in designing Gemini to be highly reliable and error-free.

Editor Notes

In an exciting update from the AI world, Google DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis, has revealed that Google is developing an AI system called Gemini that is expected to outperform ChatGPT. This development signifies Google’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology. Title: Michael Mendelsohn: A Film Financing Maverick with Unconventional Tales to Tell

Introduction

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the world of Michael Mendelsohn, a renowned film financier and producer who has carved a unique path in the industry. Mendelsohn’s company, Patriot Pictures, has been behind notable projects such as “Prisoners of the Ghostland” and “Blackout.” With his wealth of experience and unconventional storytelling, Mendelsohn shares insights on his latest ventures and his perspective on ChatGPT and the impact of COVID-19 on the film industry.

Unveiling Mendelsohn’s Journey

Hollywood heavyweights often have fascinating beginnings, and Mendelsohn is no exception. With roots tracing back to Johnny Carson’s mailroom on “The Tonight Show,” Mendelsohn’s career started from humble origins. He also spent time in the mailroom at William Morris and even worked at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984.

However, his true calling came when he transitioned to being a film financier. With a keen sense of control over his projects, Mendelsohn used a template of documents from real estate financing to finance films successfully. Some of his notable works include “True Romance,” “Reservoir Dogs,” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”

Exploring “God Is a Bullet” – A Passion Project

Mendelsohn’s latest film, “God Is a Bullet,” has been a two-decade undertaking. Based on the book of the same name by Boston Teran, this true story follows a desk cop whose daughter is kidnapped. To find her, he delves into a dangerous world, infiltrating a cult, and going to extreme lengths to save his daughter. Mendelsohn describes the film as a modern-day “Taxi Driver,” guaranteed to become a cult classic.

A Fascination with Stories of Resilience

With a personal connection to the Holocaust through his father, a survivor, Mendelsohn naturally gravitates towards stories of victims fighting back against their aggressors. He shares an anecdote of discovering that his family was not represented on the Mendelsohn family tree that documented those who had been in concentration camps. Inspired by such experiences, Mendelsohn is planning a film about eight teenagers in Krakow, Poland, who bravely fought against the Gestapo during World War II.

Selecting Projects with a Unique Voice

Mendelsohn’s approach to selecting projects sets him apart. Rather than opting for predictable blockbuster franchises, he is drawn to untold stories waiting to be explored. Underpowered Artificial Intelligence: Russias Latest Weapon

The Kremlin’s Plan to Control Information Through AI Faces an Insurmountable Flaw: Facts

In a stunning display of AI manipulation, an ethereal, electric blue video of Russian far-right leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky declared at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that “Ukraine will be liberated from the Nazis.” However, Zhirinovsky died last year, and his confident declaration clashes with the reality of Ukraine’s situation. The Kremlin’s desire to use AI to increase control over information is hindered by the presence of facts.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum: A Diminished Western Presence

The St. Petersburg Forum, an annual gathering of tech industry leaders, was intended to attract Western investment. However, this year, no Western leader attended, and the guest list was dominated by individuals from India, China, and Arab countries. Despite this diminished Western presence, Russian President Vladimir Putin used his keynote speech to highlight Russia’s progress in AI, specifically automated trucks and self-driving taxis. However, his main concern was the potential dominance of Western-directed AI and the need to protect Russia’s national security and citizen interests.

The Danger of AI Assumptions: Language Models and Propaganda

Putin’s concern about Western-dominated AI is not unfounded. Large language models like Chat GPT rely on patterns found in training data, predominantly in English. As a result, when a Russian-language prompt was submitted to ChatGPT asking about color revolutions, the chatbot responded with an interpretation that contradicted the official Russian media’s narrative. This discrepancy highlights the inherent limitations and biases of AI models trained on specific data sources.

Russia’s Ambitions to Rival ChatGPT: Yandex, Sistemma, and Sberbank

Despite the potential limitations and biases of Russian-trained models, several major Russian companies, including Yandex, Sistemma, and Sberbank, have announced their ambitions to rival ChatGPT. Yandex has incorporated AI into its ‘Alice’ offering, Sistemma unveiled its own ChatGPT competitor based on research from Stanford, and Sberbank debuted a beta version of ‘GigaChat’ with image generation functionality. However, these Russian models face strong headwinds due to the supremacy of US versions and Western tech sanctions.

Challenges Faced by Russian AI Offerings: Computing Power and IT Talent

Intense computing power is essential for the most powerful AI models, and this power is scarce in Russia due to Western tech sanctions. Retrieving results from Russian models may be significantly slower than accessing American alternatives, even with the use of VPNs. Additionally, the invasion of Ukraine led to a mass flight of IT talent, limiting the brainpower available for AI development in Russia. These challenges reinforce the fundamental conflict between the Kremlin’s desire for information control and the open-ended possibilities of generative AI.

Putin’s Dilemma: AI Potential versus “Information Security”

Ultimately, Putin must decide whether to prioritize the potential of AI or maintain his cherished “information security.” However, it appears that his quest for information control is more likely to fail in the face of an evolving technological landscape. The nationalistic ideologies once championed by figures like Vladimir Zhirinovsky may be fading into oblivion as AI continues to reshape the information landscape.

Editor Notes: GPT News Room

In conclusion, the Kremlin’s plan to use AI as a means of controlling information is hindered by the presence of facts and the limitations of AI models. Despite the ambitions of major Russian companies, the dominance of Western versions and tech sanctions pose significant challenges. Furthermore, the mass flight of IT talent from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine limits the country’s AI capabilities. It remains to be seen whether Putin will prioritize information control over the potential of generative AI. For more news and analysis on AI and other tech-related topics, visit the GPT News Room.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Utilizing ChatGPT for Business-to-Business Communications

The Impact of ChatGPT on PR and Marketing

ChatGPT  has created a unique disruption in the world of PR and marketing. PRNEWS asked industry professionals how they would utilize ChatGPT for various writing tasks, such as press releases, customer service responses, and social media copy. Interestingly, some PR experts expressed their desire to avoid the platform completely. On the other hand, there are those who have already started using ChatGPT as an opinion commentator.

There is a common misconception that AI is only relevant in the B2C industry, as these companies have access to a larger pool of customer data to leverage AI tools effectively. However, AI is just as relevant in the B2B industry. B2B communicators must explore how AI can assist them in providing better services and improving their communication tactics while also considering ethical and legal considerations.

Ethical and Legal Considerations

The B2B sales cycle is longer than that of B2C products, and as a result, nurturing relationships becomes even more critical. Building long-term trust is essential for B2B customers. Trust is a key aspect of ChatGPT, as users need to trust that the generated content is factually accurate. However, will using ChatGPT help you stand out or potentially lead to copyright issues?

Google’s stance on AI-produced content is clear – using AI-generated content to manipulate search rankings violates their spam policies. PR and marketing professionals are often unaware of the source of AI-generated information, and Google’s system of determining quality based on the number of citations is not yet in place.

The U.S. Copyright Office has recently launched an initiative to examine the copyright law and policy issues associated with AI. This initiative is a response to the rapid advancements in generative AI technologies and their increasing use by individuals and businesses. We must wait for official guidance on these matters.

Approaching ChatGPT with Caution

In the world of B2B, we strive to influence, build effective marketing strategies, and convey hidden agendas. We aim to win awards, deliver company messages, and demonstrate corporate leadership.

The concern here is not that machines are writing like humans, but rather that humans are increasingly starting to write like machines. ChatGPT should serve as a wakeup call to stop using marketing jargon and instead focus on using words to convey genuine ideas and thoughts.

From countless monkeys attempting to write Shakespeare, to the WSJ’s first Buzz Word Generator, to ChatGPT, AI has advanced significantly and has fundamentally transformed its capabilities.

ChatGPT possesses an exceptional ability to manipulate words. We’ve all come across press releases and articles that use fancy language but lack substance. The phrase “I see the words, but what do they mean?” is often heard in my company. Many writers and content creators produce copy without genuine interest in the subject matter. This is an area where machines excel!

Where do Humans Excel?

Quality writing is driven by intention. B2B professionals possess unique skills, perspectives, and relationships that cannot be replicated by AI. While AI can assist with various tasks, there are three essential components of effective PR and marketing that it lacks: creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.

Thinking beyond conventional approaches is impossible for ChatGPT; it is the box, the creator of the box, and limited by the box itself. These limitations highlight the complementary relationship between AI and human B2B professionals.

Critical thinking is crucial to understanding the causes behind correlations, recognizing and eliminating biases, and distinguishing between primary sources and personal opinions. Selling innovative solutions and developments requires tailoring copy to different audiences with diverse needs. This necessitates critical thinking, a capability that robots do not possess. Additionally, empathy is crucial in addressing issues, but robots are incapable of demonstrating empathy.

Is it Time for PR and Marketing to Embrace AI?

As with any new technology, there are benefits to be gained and lessons to be learned. However, one thing is certain: B2B professionals should utilize ChatGPT as a complementary tool to enhance consumer engagement.

Judith Ingleton-Beer is the CEO of IBA International.

Editor Notes

In the rapidly evolving world of PR and marketing, staying informed about the latest advancements in AI technology is crucial. ChatGPT has brought about significant changes and challenges for professionals in these fields. It is essential to understand the ethical and legal considerations associated with using AI-generated content. While AI can offer valuable assistance, it cannot replace the unique skills and capabilities of human professionals. It is important to approach AI tools like ChatGPT with caution and use them as complementary tools to enhance customer engagement.

However, as this technology rapidly enters the market, it is crucial to consider the security aspects and risks associated with Generative AI. While AI introduces both novel threats and exposes existing security risks, organizations must prioritize a security-first approach to AI adoption.

**Novel Threat Vectors and Existing Security Risks**

The utilization of AI systems demands attention and awareness due to the emergence of new threat vectors. These vectors can lead to bypassing access controls, unauthorized access to resources, system vulnerabilities, ethical concerns, and potential compromise of sensitive information or intellectual property. Simultaneously, traditional security risks are often overlooked when implementing AI systems, making it vital to enhance security practices across the board.

**Addressing the Risks: Categorization and Understanding**

To effectively manage the security risks associated with Generative AI, it is necessary to categorize them into distinct areas of concern. We highlight four primary categories: Trust Boundaries, Data Management, Inherent Model, and General Security Best Practices.

1. Trust Boundaries: These risks pertain to the vulnerability of access controls and the potential for unauthorized access to resources. Mitigating this risk requires a thorough understanding of trust boundaries and implementing protocols to secure them.

2. Data Management: The risks associated with data management involve the protection of sensitive information and intellectual property. Safeguarding data through encryption, access controls, and secure storage is crucial to mitigate these risks effectively.

3. Inherent Model: Understanding the vulnerabilities that exist within Generative AI models is essential for comprehensive risk management. Identifying weaknesses and implementing measures such as model validation and continuous assessment can help mitigate potential threats.

4. General Security Best Practices: Adhering to established security best practices is a fundamental aspect of AI adoption. This includes maintaining an up-to-date security posture, conducting regular audits and assessments, and fostering a culture of security awareness within the organization.

By categorizing the risks and providing a comprehensive understanding of each category, organizations can develop targeted strategies to address these security challenges head-on.

**The Concerning State of Open-Source LLMs**

While Generative AI models like LLMs have gained significant popularity, our research reveals a concerning finding. The open-source ecosystem surrounding LLMs lacks the maturity and security posture needed to safeguard these powerful models. With their increasing popularity, LLMs have become prime targets for attackers, underscoring the urgency to enhance security standards and practices throughout their development and maintenance.

**The OpenSSF Scorecard: Evaluating Security Standards**

In our assessment of the security state of open-source LLM projects, we utilized the OpenSSF Scorecard framework developed by the Open Source Security Foundation (OSSF). This framework evaluates the security of projects by assigning scores based on various security heuristics or checks. The scores range from 0 to 10, providing valuable insights into areas that require improvement.

By utilizing the Scorecard, developers can assess the risks associated with dependencies, make informed decisions, collaborate with maintainers, and prioritize security considerations. Our analysis focused on the security posture of the 50 most popular LLM/GPT-based open-source projects, comparing them to other widely-used open-source projects designated as critical by the OpenSSF. This examination offers valuable insights into the security posture of LLM projects and emphasizes the importance of considering security factors when selecting software solutions.

**Key Findings: Popularity versus Security**

Our key findings reveal significant concerns regarding the security posture of LLM-based projects. These projects, despite their immense popularity, display both immaturity and poor security scores. For example, even the most popular GPT-based project, Auto-GPT, has a relatively low Scorecard score of 3.7.

Comparing the popularity of LLM-based projects to more mature non-GPT related projects highlights the rapid rise of LLM projects in terms of popularity. However, their security posture remains far from ideal. As these systems attract attention, they become prime targets for attackers, increasing the likelihood of vulnerabilities and targeted attacks.

**Prioritizing Security in Generative AI Adoption**

Early adopters of Generative AI, especially LLMs, must prioritize comprehensive risk assessments and robust security practices throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Organizations must make informed decisions about adopting Generative AI solutions while upholding the highest standards of scrutiny and protection.

As the popularity and adoption of LLMs continue to grow, the risk landscape surrounding these systems will evolve. Security standards and practices must continually adapt to mitigate the emergence of vulnerabilities and targeted attacks. Organizations must recognize the unique challenges posed by Generative AI tools and prioritize security measures accordingly to ensure responsible and secure LLM technology usage.

**Conclusion: Striking the Balance**

Generative AI offers tremendous possibilities, but organizations must strike a balance between innovation and security. By addressing the risks associated with Generative AI, particularly LLMs, organizations can navigate the security challenges effectively and make informed decisions regarding the adoption and usage of these powerful models.

Safeguarding sensitive information and intellectual property, securing trust boundaries, continuously assessing inherent model vulnerabilities, and adhering to general security best practices are essential elements of a security-first approach to Generative AI adoption. Investing in enhanced security standards and practices is paramount to ensure the responsible and secure use of LLM technology.
