It is unwise for researchers to adopt ChatGPT.

Is Chat GPT a Threat to Social Science Research?

Since its launch in November last year, Chat GPT has been making waves in many industries, including education and research. While it is true that this technology can make research faster and more efficient, its effect on the quality and depth of research has yet to be seen. Here are three potential adverse outcomes of using Chat GPT in social science research:

Impoverished Analytical Skills and Theoretical Imagination

The first adverse outcome of using Chat GPT in research is the deskillment of the mental sphere. Chat GPT can only predict the statistical likelihood of the next word, and it cannot understand and analyze literature in the same way that human researchers can. Over-reliance on this technology can result in researchers becoming poorly equipped to handle novel and difficult problems that require human imagination and analytical skills.

Changes in The Mode of Theorizing

The second issue is that using Chat GPT changes the mode of theorizing. The technology processes data through computation and formal rationality, whereas human researchers rely on judgment and substantive rationality. Using Chat GPT to theorize embodies an assumption that the world is based on abstract and formal procedures, rules, and laws that are universally applicable, as opposed to values being negotiated, reconsidered, or even contested over time.

Distorted Conditions for a Fair and Truly Competitive Marketplace

The third problem with using Chat GPT in research is that it can distort the conditions for a fair and truly competitive marketplace for the best ideas. Since publications matter for career progression and status, the competition for permanent positions creates a strong temptation to skip the hard thinking and writing work that goes into crafting high-quality papers in pursuit of a longer list of publications to put on a CV. This can lead to a lack of original and innovative ideas and further reinforce existing power structures and academic inequalities.

While the rapid adoption of Chat GPT in research shows that it is here to stay, its effects on the research process and outcomes should not be ignored. Researchers must avoid over-reliance on Chat GPT and not allow technological advances to deskill and impoverish human imagination and analytical skills.

Editor Notes

As an AI Guru and paraphrasing expert, I understand the potential of technological advancements like Chat GPT. While it can make our lives easier, it is important to consider the potential consequences and ensure that our use of these technologies is responsible and ethical. ‘AI Pioneer’, formerly associated with Google, leaves the company and causes concern – here’s the reason behind it.

Is the rise of AI causing more harm than good? While technologies like ChatGPT and Google Bard have impressed people with their capabilities, experts in the field have raised concerns about potential negative impacts. Elon Musk and many others in the industry have signed an open letter calling for an AI arms race pause. Now, Geoffrey Hinton, a former Google employee who pioneered the use of neural networks in AI, has left the company after more than a decade to speak out against the rise of AI.

Hinton has two main concerns about AI: misinformation and automation. Despite feeling that Google was a “proper steward” for AI technology, the rise of chatbots and their abusive use has led him to view Google and Microsoft in an AI arms race that is impossible to stop. Hinton worries that the average person still struggles to differentiate between AI-created and human-created content, and that chatbots may take away more tasks in the future.

While some former Google engineers disagree with Hinton and think that Google is behaving in a “safe and responsible manner,” others have expressed concern about AI’s capabilities. Blake Lemoine, another former Google engineer claims that Google’s large language model, LaMDA, which powers Google Bard, was sentient. He was fired soon after making this claim. Lemoine thinks that Google was about to release a version of Bard prior to OpenAI unleashing ChatGPT but pulled the plug partly because of concerns he raised.

However, Microsoft’s chief scientific officer, Eric Horvitz, sits somewhere in the middle between these two positions. While he recently signed an open letter calling for government regulation of AI, rather than a research pause, he doesn’t necessarily think that we need to slam the brakes on the development of AI. Horvitz argues that bad actors using AI is a major concern, but an AI takeover is not a top worry.

Both Hinton and Horvitz agree that bad actors misusing AI is a key concern, with Hinton advocating for stopping generative AI before it becomes a major issue, while Horvitz calls for government regulations and corporate action to work together to ensure a safer future. With NeMo Guardrails, Nvidia has announced new technology to limit the boundaries that AI chatbots can operate within, showing that companies are taking the issue of AI safety seriously.

In conclusion, there’s no unanimity regarding the threat that AI poses or if companies are currently doing enough to address threats that may exist. However, between these different positions, a common thread appears. With new advances in AI technology on the horizon, only time will tell if Hinton’s concerns will be realized, or if optimists like Lemoine and Horvitz are closer to the mark.

AI Pioneer Resigns from Google to Alert Public about the Risks of ChatGPT-like Products

Geoffrey Hinton, the father of AI, expressed concerns about the risks of generative AI applications like Google’s Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which he helped develop through his neural network technology. In his interview with The New York Times, Hinton emphasized his worry about the dangers that AI can pose to society, both in the short and long term. Hinton believes that tech giants are in a new AI arms race that might be impossible to stop. These AI products would fertilize the web with generative photos, videos, and text causing ordinary people to not be able to distinguish fact from fiction. AI might replace humans in jobs that require repetitive tasks, and AI will be allowed to generate and run its own code in the future, which could be dangerous for humanity.

Hinton began working on neural networks in 1972 as a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. In 2012, Hinton and his two students created a neural network that could analyze thousands of photos and learn to identify common objects. Ilya Sutskever and Alex Krishevsky were those students, with the former becoming the chief scientist at OpenAI. Google spent $44 million to purchase Hinton’s company, and during his time at the company, he perfected various AI products. The sudden rise of ChatGPT and its rapid deployment by Microsoft in Bing catalyzed new competition with Google, which Hinton did not appreciate. He felt the AI arms race may be too difficult to stop.

Hinton hopes for tech companies to behave responsibly and prevent AI from becoming uncontrollable. He foresees regulating the AI space might be easier said than done, as companies might be working on the tech behind closed doors. Hinton used to console himself with the well-known sentiment that “if I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have.” But he doesn’t feel that way anymore.

Editor Notes:
Geoffrey Hinton’s opinions regarding AI has weight due to his contribution to the development of neural network technology. It’s worrying to know the risks of generative AI applications like OpenAI and Google’s Bard, which are not controlled by a strict institution. We should be aware of these applications and take measures to limit their detrimental impacts. If you’d like to stay updated on AI and the latest news, visit GPT News Room.

Binance claims to be the target of ChatGPT’s malicious campaign.

Binance Under Attack by an A.I.-Powered Disinformation Campaign

The world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, has been hit by a disinformation campaign powered by artificial intelligence (A.I.). The company recently received numerous inquiries asking if its founder, Changpeng Zhao, was associated with the Chinese Communist Party. A.I. platform ChatGPT reported that Zhao developed a social media platform for the China National Petroleum Association, which was debunked by Binance. According to chief strategy officer Patrick Hillman, Binance found that ChatGPT pointed them to a fake LinkedIn page and a Forbes webpage from 2018 that shows a “not found” error. While it is unclear if Forbes actually published the story, if Binance’s account of events is accurate, it marks a new and troubling milestone; A.I. is now being used to smear companies in the halls of power in Washington.

Main keyword: Binance

Why Binance’s Claims are Troubling

Using A.I. to spread disinformation is a concerning development. Experts have already warned of tools like ChatGPT being weaponized to create fake media stories and other bogus content to manipulate the political process. Binance’s experience with the attack shows that this era has already arrived. Binance has repeatedly denied that Changpeng Zhao has any links to the Chinese Community Party. Moreover, Hillman called out the individuals behind the disinformation for not even bothering to fact-check their source. It’s a sad state of affairs, and Binance is one of the first victims of these types of attacks.

How Binance’s Venture Arm is Doing

In other crypto news, Binance’s venture arm recently announced that their portfolio has grown to $9 billion. Despite the intense regulatory scrutiny, they do not plan to scale back. This news indicates that Binance is doing well, and they are committed to expanding their company’s reach.

MasterCard Joins the Crypto Party

In the cryptocurrency industry, MasterCard is entering the space by launching a new service called Crypto Credential. It will provide a means to confirm the identity of parties involved in wallet-based transactions. This news is an exciting development for the industry as a whole.

Hong Kong Banks to Serve Crypto Firms

Turning to Asia, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority has issued a circular telling the city’s banks to offer banking services to crypto firms. This will benefit the crypto industry by providing it with faster access to banking services.

Jack Dorsey on Elon Musk

Finally, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has reversed his stance on Elon Musk taking over the social media platform. Dorsey believes that it went downhill after Musk took over. This news shows that even the top minds in the industry can have differing opinions.

Editor Notes

The cryptocurrency industry is an ever-changing and exciting space. However, as the industry grows, it’s important to keep up with the latest news, including how A.I. tools can be used to spread disinformation campaigns like the one that targeted Binance.
