Despite Warning of Dangers, Elon Musk Intensifies A.I. Pursuits

Elon Musk Cuts Ties with OpenAI Over Twitter Data Licensing

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, has a complicated relationship with artificial intelligence (A.I.). While he believes the technology could be disastrous if managed poorly, he also sees it as a turning point for humanity. Recently, Musk became frustrated with the development of A.I. at OpenAI, which he helped found in 2015 as a non-profit, as he believes it no longer operates as a non-profit, and is building technology that takes sides on political and social debates. Musk is in talks with a researcher at the University of Toronto to build his own A.I. company called X.AI, and has hired top A.I. researchers from Google’s DeepMind at Twitter. Musk aims to create a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT that generates politically charged material without restrictions.

Musk believes that his own A.I. efforts offer better, safer alternatives than those of his competitors. He has ramped up his own A.I. activities since cutting ties with OpenAI, while speaking publicly about the hazards of A.I. Musk recently signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause on the technology’s development due to its “profound risks to society”. He also called for regulators to protect society from A.I., even though his car company has used A.I. systems to push the boundaries of self-driving technologies that have been involved in fatal crashes.

Musk’s roots in A.I. date back to 2011, when he was an early investor in DeepMind, a London start-up that set out to build A.G.I. He later helped fund the Future of Life Institute, which explores existential risks to humanity, and gave $10 million. In 2015, Musk met with several A.I. researchers and entrepreneurs, and OpenAI was founded as a non-profit, with Musk and others pledging $1 billion in donations. OpenAI vowed to “open source” all its research, but while developing ChatGPT, the lab realized that openly sharing its software could be dangerous. Using A.I., individuals and organizations can potentially generate and distribute false information more quickly and efficiently than they otherwise could.

In December, Musk became angry about the development of A.I. and cut OpenAI off from Twitter’s data, after he learned that OpenAI was licensing Twitter’s data for about $2 million a year to help build ChatGPT. The relationship between OpenAI and Twitter came about after Twitter was purchased by Musk in October for $44 billion. Musk believed that OpenAI was not paying Twitter enough for the data.

Editor Notes

Elon Musk’s decision to cut ties with OpenAI has caused a stir in the A.I. community. While he has voiced concerns over the technology’s hazards, he is also pushing forward with his own A.I. projects. His actions highlight the need for open discussion and greater transparency around the development of A.I. technologies, and the importance of closely examining the relationship between corporations and research institutions when it comes to A.I. research.
