Chat-GPT Rapidly Gains Over 100 Million Users: Healthcare Providers Struggle to Keep Up
Chat-GPT by OpenAI has gained more than 100 million users in just five months since its launch, with people worldwide using the technology for various reasons, including writing high school essays, chatting on dating apps, and generating cover letters. Despite the healthcare industry’s notorious slowness in adopting new technologies, Chat-GPT has already made inroads in this field. For example, Epic, a healthcare software giant, recently announced its integration of GPT-4, the latest version of the AI model, into electronic health records. While exciting, experts such as Peter Lee, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for research and incubation, advise healthcare leaders to familiarize themselves with Chat-GPT before deciding if and how to use it.
According to Lee, the tool’s rapid adoption took Microsoft by surprise, with the company initially predicting that it would have about one million users. He warned that while there are tremendous opportunities with Chat-GPT, there are also significant risks that the healthcare sector must address, including the general public’s poor understanding of how the technology works. Users often believe that Chat-GPT can provide accurate content and reasoning about how it came to its conclusions, when its objective function is to be convincing, not correct.
Experts recommend that healthcare leaders examine Chat-GPT to make informed decisions on its appropriateness for use and circumstances. Reid Blackman, CEO of Virtue Consultants, which provides advisory services for AI ethics, suggests developing a systematic approach for identifying ethical risks and assessing appropriate risk mitigation strategies sooner rather than later. Blackman advises healthcare leaders to be wary of Chat-GPT’s use-case-specific risks and focus on establishing an accountability framework for addressing new technologies’ risks to move forward.
Editor Notes:
With the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, healthcare leaders must embrace technology to provide value-based care. However, healthcare systems must first acknowledge and address the ethical considerations that come with the use of AI in healthcare. For in-depth AI news and analysis, visit GPT News Room.
