The Ethical Concerns Surrounding ChatGPT and AI
In the next five years, the world of smart generative AI will only continue to grow and advance in numerous industries, particularly in media and entertainment. However, the rise of AI has been met with concerns from individuals such as Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, who have called for legislation and a pause on generative AI. Francois Chollet, an AI researcher at Google, downplays the impact that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT will have on the market. Despite this, many AI ethicists are gravely concerned about the risks inherent in AI and the need for a vision of the world we want to live in and unity in legal framework to prevent the creation of a world where machines dominate mankind.
While there is much excitement surrounding generative AI and chatbots, there are also prickly issues to resolve, such as producing toxic content, surfacing up biases on minorities, copyright infringement, and labor market shifts. Furthermore, one of the major risks associated with generative AI is the hallucination effect that creates an answer based on inaccurate data sourced from fake news.
AI leader and deep learning expert, Yoshua Bengio, advocates for a legal framework to create some guardrails around the AI industry. The use of ChatGPT and other large language models raises legal and ethical issues related to copyright, privacy, misuse, bias, and transparency. As this industry matures, we must answer more of the challenging ethical questions on AI to ensure that technology does not negatively impact society.
Editor Notes:
The rise of AI has been a hot topic for a while now, with positive and negative opinions flooding media outlets. While it’s understandable to be excited about this advancement in technology, it’s equally important to consider the potential risks and dangers that it poses to humanity as well. We must ensure that laws are put in place, and ethical guidelines are followed to make sure that technology does not get away from us.
