The Power of GPT-3 to Generate AI-Generated Responses in HCI Research

Researchers at the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI) have discovered a breakthrough in human-computer interaction (HCI) research. Slow and costly, studying people has become a thing of the past with the recent use of Large Language Models (LLMs), which includes GPT-3. GPT-3 has been instrumental in generating open-ended answers to questions about the player experience in video games, and has proven to be even more convincing compared to real responses.

These AI-generated responses have opened up new avenues for gathering data quickly and at low cost, which may help in fast iteration, and initial testing of study designs and data analysis pipelines. However, data based on AI-generated responses, should be confirmed with real data to ensure accuracy and validity.

Researchers based at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki, discovered some subtle differences in different versions of GPT-3 that affected the diversity of AI-generated responses. On the other hand, data from popular crowdsourcing platforms may now be suspect, as AI-generated responses are hard to distinguish from real ones. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk), for instance, can host surveys or research tasks for HCI, psychology, or related scientific areas, but data generated out of this platform may become untrustworthy.

The ethical implications of synthetic data for anonymity, privacy, and data protection in medical fields and similar domains are clear. However, in the slim of HCI and science more widely, synthetic interviews, and artificial experiments raise questions regarding the trustworthiness of crowdsourcing approaches that seek to gather user data online. Synthetic data may prove useful for initial exploration and piloting of research ideas at the onset, but LLMs cannot and should not replace real participants.

According to Aalto University associate professor Perttu Hämäläinen, “it may be time to abandon platforms like Mturk for collecting real data and go back to lab studies.” In short, while synthetic data has its advantages, researchers must critically examine material generated out of LLMs like GPT-3. Moreover, researchers must weigh the benefits of fast iteration and low cost against the potential ethical implications associated with synthetic data.

“Evaluating Large Language Models in Generating Synthetic HCI Research Data: a Case Study” was awarded Best Paper at CHI, the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in late April 2023. With the rise of LLMs and its potential impact in various fields, it is essential for researchers to examine how best they can leverage these models without compromising on validity and ethics.
