Artificial Intelligence Could Potentially Reach Your Physician’s Office, but It’s Not Yet Capable of Treating Patients – L’Observateur

Is AI ready to take over in healthcare? Not quite yet, but some of the biggest companies out there are pushing the latest AI technology, known as “generative AI,” into healthcare. Google, Microsoft, and other big names want their AI to generate notes for physicians and provide second opinions. Startups are also joining the fray, offering AI transcription and other products to hospital systems or directly to patients.

The underlying technology relies on synthesizing huge chunks of text or other data to predict text that would follow a given query, but the risks are significant. Security concerns and the risk of hallucinations or the divulging of patients’ private information mean that cautious adoption is necessary.

Some technologists and doctors are ambivalent about the technology, acknowledging its potential to provide a second opinion and lighten the administrative burden, but still noting the current limitations of the technology. AI still misses life-threatening conditions, and sometimes “hallucinates” by making up information that sounds convincing.

Despite the risks, the rewards could be significant. For example, Nabla Copilot is a service that sits in on virtual patient visits and automatically summarizes them into a standard note format. Results are solid, and while the summaries don’t pick up on nonverbal cues, and the technology is not yet 100% there, it saves doctors time and means they can focus more on helping patients.

Overall, it seems that AI may not be ready to see patients just yet, but it’s definitely on its way. Careful adoption and ongoing research is necessary to ensure that the risks are kept to a minimum and the technology remains useful and effective.
