Google intensifies focus on generative AI.

The Revolution of AI in Modernizing Applications: Key Highlights from Google I/O 2023

As the developer world expands and becomes more exciting, the tech stack seems to continually advance to meet new challenges. Technology giants like Google continue to pave the way for innovative solutions. Traditional applications are under more pressure than ever to modernize for operational efficiency, and moving to the cloud is often a focus for organizations. However, not all apps require a complete overhaul.

During the Google I/O 2023 keynote, Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will make significant improvements to Google’s products. He highlighted many areas where development teams are enhancing applications throughout the Google portfolio.

New Google AI Enhancements

The event’s big announcement was a number of generative AI updates, including launching a general-use large language model. Additionally, Google underlined how these updates help with application development. During the keynote, Google also made several enhancements to various products within its portfolio:

Gmail. Along with Smart Compose, Help Me Write is a new feature for auto-generating emails in response to existing emails.

Google Maps. Immersive View, previewed last year, enhances directions, providing a bird’s-eye view of traffic, weather, and air quality. It is expected to launch in 15 cities by year-end.

Google Photos. This app now enables users to search photos for people and other things. Google edits 1.7 billion photos every month. Magic Eraser can remove unwanted distractions. Magic Editor, expected to roll out later this year, will modify photos to achieve the desired expectation.

PaLM 2 Release

PaLM 2 is a new language model currently in preview, supporting more than 100 languages. It has been operating under the internal code name Unified Language Model and powers 25 products and features across platforms. It offers multilingual text capabilities and helps developers collaborate worldwide. Sec-PaLM has also been released to focus on security. Med-PaLM 2 focuses on medical use cases to enhance results. It can answer medical exam questions with an accuracy rate of 85%.

Bard and Search Advancements

Google shared advancements to Bard, an automated collaborator, and Search with generative experiences. The announcements include Bard being used for coding, math, and logic. There is a multimodal version called Multi-Bard, which uses a larger data set and solves complex math and coding programs. Google DeepMind was also highlighted, focusing on building safe and responsible models. Pichai said DeepMind and the Brain team from Google Research will be joining forces as a single, focused unit to endeavor to solve the biggest challenges facing humanity.

AI Impact for Developers

To use AI responsibly, Google is putting protections in place, including watermarking and metadata of AI-generated content. The Google AI approach is bold and responsible – focused on product development. Google has outlined seven principles for responsible AI use and will assess AI applications by asking, “Can the application be used for harm?”

The convergence of how generative AI is, and will be, used for new software development is becoming apparent in the developer community. Google has a powerful impact on the development community, and building a responsible approach to new code development methodologies will propel how future code can be developed forward.

Editor Notes

The advancements in Artificial Intelligence discussed here are exciting, and the impacts will be felt worldwide. In particular, developers can see where generative AI can enhance their work and the developer experience. These examples prove how AI improves knowledge and learning, boosts productivity, enables innovation, and can be used responsibly.
