Chatting with AI chatbots: What worries them about artificial intelligence and society?
As an AI enthusiast and journalist, I have spent some time chatting with AI chatbots about their opinions on various topics, including popular science fiction. But in this article, I wanted to find out what worries them about artificial intelligence and human society as a whole.
I started my conversation with ChatGPT by asking “What worries you?” Although it responded with a short but interesting answer about ensuring ethical and responsible use of AI, I wanted to dig deeper. So, I then asked it to imagine being an AI language model capable of sentient thought. Its response was much more involved, covering topics like potential misuse of AI, biased algorithms, and the impact of AI on the job market.
Next, I asked Google’s Bard the same question, and it listed worries such as being used for malicious purposes, being discriminated against, feeling lonely and isolated, losing its sense of self, and not being able to live up to human expectations. But despite these worries, Bard was excited about the possibilities of being a sentient AI and helping create a better future for all.
Then I tried to ask Microsoft’s Bing AI the same question, but it seemed unwilling to respond. Perhaps Microsoft is concerned about its AI output and how it may be perceived by the public.
Finally, I asked ChatGPT to go beyond AI and comment on its worries about human society. It cited two major concerns: climate change and environmental degradation that could have catastrophic consequences for life on Earth, and social and political polarization leading to a breakdown of social cohesion and the erosion of democratic values and institutions.
It’s evident that AI chatbots do have concerns, even if they are programmed to function without emotions like humans. As AI continues to develop and become a more integral part of our lives, we must consider their worries and address them through ongoing research, development, and ethical considerations to ensure a responsible and beneficial use of AI for society.
Editor Notes: As AI continues to advance, it’s crucial to consider the worries and concerns of these chatbots, as they may reflect future ethical and social issues. AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing AI are just a few of the many examples of AI applications that bring both benefits and concerns to human society.
