How Artificial Intelligence is Changing Workplace Communication
In the age of technology, workplace conversations have become a major part of daily work tasks. Many workers spend a whopping five hours a day on emails and 90 minutes on messaging platforms like Slack. The chatter is often the most enjoyable part of the workday, but managing the overload of messages can be overwhelming. This begs the question: Can robots help us with this task?
In April, writer Emma Goldberg did an experiment to find out. For a week, she communicated exclusively through OpenAI’s ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence language model. She even downloaded a Chrome extension that drafted emails for her. The results were mixed, with the bot sometimes overwhelming teammates and often lacking the emotional depth of online conversations.
The rise of generative AI has caused concern about job displacement. Paralegals and personal assistants could easily be replaced by AI in 10 years. However, the question for Goldberg’s experiment was a simpler one: Would we miss our old ways of communicating if AI took over the drudgery of it?
Microsoft has already introduced a product called Microsoft 365 Copilot that can handle the same tasks Goldberg used ChatGPT for, along with note-taking during meetings, analyzing spreadsheet data, and identifying problems in projects. It saved Microsoft Vice President Jon Friedman two hours of work in six minutes. Although Copilot hasn’t yet achieved human-like humor, it can still make decent attempts at comedic relief.
While AI may save time and increase productivity, some argue that outsourcing relationships is just too odd. A future email could ask, “Did you even read it?” and the response could be “no,” leading to a breakdown in human connections. Nonetheless, the use of AI in workplace communication marks a significant shift in how we work across all industries.
