Plexamp, the classic-yet-modern music player initially incubated by Plex’s Labs division, is making waves with its latest update. The company has announced a new feature called “Sonic Sage,” which harnesses the power of OpenAI’s ChatGPT to build personalized music playlists by scanning users’ music libraries and leveraging their TIDAL subscription.
This move follows Spotify’s launch of an AI DJ, which selects and introduces music for its streaming users. Similarly, other third-party apps like Petey are using ChatGPT to create Apple Music playlists.
While Plexamp has served as an enjoyable and user-friendly way to enjoy music in a classic interface designed for audiophiles, it has also been a platform for Plex to experiment with different technologies. For instance, in 2021, the app was updated with a “Super Sonic” feature that matched songs based on “sonic similarity” instead of metadata alone for creating one-of-a-kind mixes.
Now, Plexamp is enabling its users to take customization to the next level with Sonic Sage. The new feature allows users to create their own playlists using natural language to describe what they want to hear, such as “mellow ballads by heavy metal bands” or “upbeat electronic tracks from The Chainsmokers and other DJ duos.” To use Sonic Sage, users must be Plex Pass subscribers and TIDAL’s streaming music service subscribers. They’ll also need to create an OpenAI account and enter an OpenAI API key in Plexamp settings to enable Sonic Sage.
Plexamp now offers several other music discovery options, too. Users can enjoy a range of DJ modes, go on “sonic adventures,” use “mood radios,” travel back in time to rediscover oldies, and more. The app supports platforms such as iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux, and Headless.
Overall, Plexamp with Sonic Sage brings a new level of personalization to one’s music experience. If you’re a music lover, this app is worth exploring.
