How GPT-3 is Changing the Gathering of Human-Computer Interaction Research Data

Harnessing the power of large language models, the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI) has used GPT-3 to generate open-ended responses to questions about player experience in video games. Synthetic interviews offer a new, cost-effective way of gathering data quickly for HCI research. These responses were even more convincing to humans than real responses. However, the researchers discovered different versions of GPT-3 affected the diversity of AI-generated responses.

Synthetic data raises questions about the trustworthiness of crowdsourcing when it comes to gathering user data online. Any findings based on AI-generated data should be confirmed with real data, and platforms like Amazon’s MTurk may now be suspect. But LLMs cannot replace real participants, and synthetic data may only be useful for initial exploration and piloting of research ideas.

This research won the Best Paper award at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI). Synthetic data has clear implications for anonymity, privacy, and data protection in fields like medicine.

It’s important to keep in mind that while synthetic data has numerous benefits, it’s not a replacement for real data. Synthetic data may have a place in HCI and science research for initial testing, but findings must be confirmed with real data. Crowdsourcing isn’t going away, but researchers should proceed with caution and use multiple methods of data collection.
