The Search Generative Experience is bringing AI to Google search.

Google’s New Search: The Future is AI

The future of Google search is AI, and it’s changing the way we search for information online. But it’s not just about chatbots and redesigns. Instead, Google is putting AI front and center in its existing search results. Google’s large language models (LLM) are powering this change, including a new model called PaLM 2 and the Multitask Unified Model (MUM) that understand multiple types of media.

To demonstrate how this works, Liz Reid, Google’s VP of Search, pulls up the Google search box and types in “Why is sourdough bread still so popular?” Within seconds, an orange rectangular section appears above the standard search results, pulsing with the phrase “Generative AI is experimental.” Then, an AI-generated summary appears that describes the taste and health benefits of sourdough bread.

This is just the beginning. Google’s implementation of AI goes much further than just generating summaries. The AI snapshot, as Google calls it, will pull information from all over the web and provide corroborating sources. For example, if you search for “the best Bluetooth speakers for the beach,” an AI-generated summary will appear at the top of the search results, along with links to buying guides and shopping links for recommended options.

This new AI-first look for Google’s search results page is colorful, innovative, and a significant change from the traditional “10 blue links” search results. These AI snapshots will change the way people search, with an additional input layer to help you ask better and richer questions.

However, this new feature is experimental, and Google has implemented Search Generative Experience (SGE), part of the also-new feature called Search Labs. You’ll need to opt-in to access these AI snapshots, and they won’t appear for every search. Sensitive subjects like health and finances are currently set to avoid AI interference altogether.

But for those who do opt-in, these AI snapshots could revolutionize how we find information online. Google’s VP of Search, Liz Reid, says that the goal for these LLM models is to provide “sources to read more” about any given topic.

In conclusion, the future of Google Search is AI, and this change is happening now. With the new AI snapshot feature, Google is giving us a glimpse of how searching for information online will evolve. The opt-in feature is experimental, but it’s likely just the first step in a complete rethinking of how people search.
