What are the possibilities of AI in the field of construction?

How AI is Revolutionizing Construction: Opportunities and Challenges

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the construction industry, and recent advancements in technology like ChatGPT have made it easily accessible to everyone. But what exactly is AI in construction and how can it benefit the industry? By leveraging AI, construction can become more productive, safe and sustainable. It can save time, reduce costs and improve the quality and environmental impact of buildings. AI can also be instrumental in making informed decisions quickly, which is critical for addressing some of the sector’s major challenges.

AI for Overcoming Challenges

COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption, and many industries had to turn to technology solutions, including AI, to find new ways of operating remotely. In construction, the University of Strathclyde and Robert Gordon University (RGU) collaborated on a project that launched an AI-powered online platform for remote building inspection and monitoring. AI-powered technologies like VR were used to collect real-time data for automated decision-making, which meant building control officers and safety inspectors could assess buildings remotely without increasing the number of people on site.

Scaling Solutions for Climate Emergency

When it comes to sector-wide challenges, nothing is more pressing than the climate emergency. Some companies and researchers are already using AI to address the challenge of retrofitting the built environment for reducing carbon emissions. IRT, a thermal-imaging and data capture and analysis company in collaboration with RGU and The Data Lab, developed an AI solution for reducing heat loss in homes. Another project led by the FES Group and supported by BE-ST, explored using AI to identify different objects within the 3D image captured to speed up the data analysis process and ensure safety and compliance.

BE-ST: Accelerating Transformation

As the UK innovation center for built environment and construction, BE-ST is at the forefront of bringing emerging technologies to the industry to increase awareness, support scaling of tech usage and ask what potential these technologies have in accelerating the journey to net-zero carbon. When it comes to AI, we have only scratched the surface of the potential it has to offer. ChatGPT’s entry into mainstream technology raises the question of the potential of natural language processing in building control, design, and compliance.

AI Ethics and Challenges

While AI has potential, there is a need to address ethical and legal concerns around relying on AI tools to make decisions. The Future of Life Institute recently published an open letter, signed by tech experts like Steve Wozniak, calling for a pause on training systems “more powerful than GPT-4” to address the regulatory, ethical, and safety concerns of AI.

Embracing AI for Progress

Emerging AI, Machine learning technologies trained on reliable datasets, coupled with open-source AI, and community-driven developments, indicate a tangible path to wider adoption. While some concerns need to be addressed, such as regulatory frameworks and ethical considerations, if we embrace AI for its potential in the construction industry, it will go a long way to helping us on our journey to solving some of the sector’s biggest challenges.

Editor Notes

AI is ushering in a new era of innovation and progress across a range of industries, including construction. As we have seen, AI can help companies overcome significant challenges such as those posed by COVID-19 and climate change. It’s essential to responsible AI and the ethical considerations surrounding its use in building safer, sustainable homes and infrastructure.
