ChatGPT: The Unreliable Colleague that Owns Up to Errors Only When Caught

Is Artificial Intelligence the New Workhorse of the Modern Society?

Using generative artificial intelligence to complete tasks is on the rise, but is it worth the risk? Roni Rosenfeld, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, saw first-hand how making use of AI can be tempting, but not always accurate. Rosenfeld turned to GPT4, a premium version of the AI software program, to generate a love poem using a limited number of words. Despite needing more instruction, the AI platform finally executed the request, leaving Rosenfeld with a less-than-perfect poem. Meanwhile, lawyer Steven A. Schwartz recently used ChatGPT to compile a brief for a client suing an airline. Unfortunately, it contained cases that had “no basis in reality” and was ultimately found to be full of errors.

While some believe AI will continue to evolve and take over many aspects of work, others warn against its overreliance. Aram Sinnreich, co-author of The Secret Life of Data, takes the point of view that the use of AI to complete tasks is a sign of a crisis within a particular field where labor is not valued. However, Luis A.N. Amaral, a professor at Northwestern University, sees some benefits in the technology. He notes that as AI becomes more accurate, people will likely rely on it more, but acknowledges that there are inevitable risks.

Should you rely on AI to complete your work? The answer, for now, is not entirely clear. While AI can be helpful, it’s not perfect, and its use should be approached with caution. As Peter Morici points out in a MarketWatch column, the risk of relying on AI for all aspects of work is that it may do more harm than good.

In sum, AI is not a replacement for human creativity or oversight. It’s a tool that can be helpful in completing certain tasks, but it should never be relied upon entirely. In the meantime, we must continue to watch and learn as the technology develops.

Editor Notes:

As AI continues to evolve, it is up to us to decide how much we want to rely upon it. While it can be helpful, its use should be approached with caution. For more insights and news on the latest developments in AI, visit GPT News Room.
