Mercedes-Benz Integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Cars for Enhanced AI Experience
German automaker Mercedes-Benz has announced its partnership with OpenAI to bring the ChatGPT chatbot to its vehicles through the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) feature, providing drivers with AI-driven voice commands and additional functionality. The beta program for this integration will begin on Friday, June 16, and continue for three months.
Drivers who wish to join the beta program can simply ask their car about it to get started. However, it is important to note that this initiative is currently limited to the United States market.
Mercedes-Benz stated that the ChatGPT chatbot will be implemented in its cars through Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, which was launched by the tech giant in March. While ChatGPT is a new addition, the MBUX voice assistant and its “Hey Mercedes” feature were introduced in 2018 on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
According to a sales representative at Mercedes-Benz of Carlsbad in California, the voice commands for ChatGPT will be directed through the car itself, enabling users to interact with the AI directly. This voice assistant allows drivers to perform various actions such as adjusting the car’s temperature, playing music, and setting navigation. However, it is important to note that these commands will only work inside the car.
While the current version of the “Hey Mercedes” feature is capable of answering questions, the integration of ChatGPT’s large language model aims to enhance the intuitiveness of the responses. However, concerns regarding the safety and effectiveness of AI tools may arise among some Mercedes-Benz owners.
Mercedes-Benz reassures drivers who may not feel comfortable with ChatGPT in their cars that data protection is a top priority. The chatbot will operate within a controlled cloud environment, allowing the automaker to monitor for potential risks and continuously improve the system.
“The integration of ChatGPT with Microsoft in our controlled cloud environment is a milestone on our way to making our cars the center of our customers’ digital lives,” stated Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz Group CTO. “Everything is under one big goal: redefining the relationship with your Mercedes.”
This is not the first technology testing venture for Mercedes-Benz. In early 2020, the automaker partnered with the UK-based blockchain startup Circulor to reduce CO2 emissions in its supply chain.
