‘OpenAI’ Creator and CEO, Sam Altman, Urges ‘Global Collaboration’ for AI Regulations.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Urges Coordinated International Regulation of Generative AI

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, took advantage of a high-profile trip to South Korea recently, to push for international regulation of generative artificial intelligence. The technology underpins OpenAI’s well-known chatbot, ChatGPT. At an event in Seoul, Altman warned about the risk of human extinction from AI and that it “should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.” President Yoon Suk Yeol stressed the importance of international standards to prevent unwanted “side effects” related to messaging platforms like ChatGPT and said that regulation needed to come “with a sense of speed.”

Governments already face pressure to regulate AI. Top US and European officials have met in Sweden to discuss oversight of AI, pledging to establish voluntary codes of conduct. Meanwhile, in China, authorities will “be initiating AI regulation,” according to Elon Musk, who helped found OpenAI before breaking from the group. Generative AI has already begun to change the job market. Goldman Sachs estimates that as many as 300 million full-time roles around the world could eventually be automated in some part by generative AI, with 14 million disappearing in the next five years alone.

Altman’s trip ended in Seoul, following stops in India, Israel, and the UAE. On his visit to India, he met with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to discuss how the country could benefit from AI.

Editor Notes: OpenAI has raised significant concerns about the capabilities of artificial intelligence, and these fears aren’t unfounded. Governments, industry and the public must all engage on this issue. While AI has the potential to generate untold benefits and create many new jobs, which cannot be achieved through traditional means, it is essential that the technology is accompanied by effective regulation and governance.
