Phones to have GPT-like technology with the launch of Qualcomm

Qualcomm’s Next-Gen Processors Pave Way for Built-in Generative AI in Smartphones

As artificial intelligence applications like ChatGPT, Bard and DALL-E continue to gain popularity, San Diego’s Qualcomm, a mobile chip manufacturer, is working to bring these technologies to smartphones with its next-generation processors. The company is switching from a communications-focused company to a connected processor, and its plans for mobile phones will make it a prominent name in wireless communication, low power compute, and AI that can be used by many industries.

Generative AI Technology in Smartphones

The built-in generative AI technology in smartphones would help users put in their queries just like they do with applications like ChatGPT and receive the answers. Presently, with generative AI technologies, all the queries are run through the cloud. However, this will not be cost-effective for companies running the systems in the future.

Qualcomm’s Hybrid AI Model

“India is a mobile-first country. Over the next few years, we will see the evolution of generative AI, with consumers expecting the technology to be leveraged on devices such as smartphones,” says Rajen Vagadia, vice president at Qualcomm and president of its India and SAARC operations. Qualcomm recently demonstrated a generative AI model using its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, which tested a stable diffusion model taking text as a prompt or a query and generating images based on it.

Vagadia said that such technology must come to smartphones because the cost of running it on a cloud is estimated to increase ten times compared with a simple search on the internet. The phone will become a hybrid AI that will coexist with the cloud to scale generative AI technology. Vagadia added that the technology would first come in premium phones and then be extended to phones in other price ranges.

Benefits of Built-in Generative AI in Smartphones

“Apart from the cost benefits, consumers also feel that whatever query they ask stays with them within their device due to several privacy and security concerns. Those (concerns) will also get resolved once generative AI comes to smartphones,” Vagadia said. With Qualcomm’s generative AI technology built into smartphones, users won’t need to query offsite servers to answer questions, enhancing privacy, and reducing latency. It will also enhance user experience by speeding up responses and reducing the data sent to cloud servers.

Qualcomm’s Position and Future Plans

Qualcomm collaborates with smartphone companies and powers the handsets with its range of Snapdragon chipsets. It has a strong presence in the automotive and IoT segments, and in India, it holds 25% market share in chipsets, according to analysts. With the shift towards connected processors and generative AI, Qualcomm positions itself to be at the forefront of wireless communication, low power compute, and AI that can be used by many industries.

The Future of Built-in Generative AI in Smartphones

Consumers expect that the technology that is leveraged on devices such as ChatGPT, Bard, and DALL-E will soon become the norm on smartphones. And with Qualcomm’s built-in generative AI technology, the smartphone will become a hybrid AI model that coexists with the cloud to scale the technology. With this technology extending beyond premium phones, the entire smartphone market is likely to see a significant transformation in the future.

Editor’s Notes

For anyone following AI technologies, such as generative AI, it’s clear that their applications are growing immensely, and Qualcomm’s plans to bring this technology to smartphones through its next-generation processors are exciting news. From consumer privacy concerns to faster response times, built-in generative AI in smartphones will open several doors for the mobile industry. It’s amazing to think about the impact this technology will have on the smartphone market in the future.
