This is What Happened When I Requested a Skincare Routine from ChatGPT

The Rise of AI in Skincare: My Experience with ChatGPT

In recent times, AI chatbots have been making headlines for their ability to assist with a wide range of tasks, from organizing travel itineraries to providing weight-loss meal plans. As someone who has been wary of AI, I decided to explore its capabilities and compare it to my usual interviews with dermatologists. To put ChatGPT to the test, I requested a personalized anti-aging skincare routine for a 31-year-old woman.

While I did eventually receive a feasible plan, I found it to be unrealistic and expensive. Although I didn’t gain any groundbreaking knowledge, it did reassure me that AI won’t be replacing dermatologists anytime soon. The overwhelming and unhelpful advice from ChatGPT made me appreciate the importance of expert guidance in skincare.

When I initially asked for a skincare routine to reduce wrinkles in a 31-year-old woman, the advice provided by ChatGPT wasn’t fundamentally different from what dermatologists typically recommend. Using peptide products and sunscreen are indeed beneficial for anti-aging purposes. However, the sheer volume of vague variations and product suggestions without clear instructions on application or timing left me feeling overwhelmed. Dermatologists usually advise using retinol at night and vitamin C serum in the morning. Additionally, some products can cause irritation or breakouts if used daily.

I decided to try again, this time asking for the best anti-aging skincare products for a 31-year-old woman. While the list was more specific, it still failed to provide instructions on how to use the products or whether it was safe to layer them. I craved specificity and guidance on what to purchase, as not all serums are created equal.

In my frustration, I decided to narrow down my request even further and asked for a daily skincare routine targeting forehead wrinkles in a 31-year-old woman. Surprisingly, this yielded the best results. I received a 6-step routine for both morning and evening, along with recommendations for higher and lower-budget skincare items. To my surprise, the AI suggested three products that I already use. It’s eerie to think how it obtained this information, but I’ll just consider it a coincidental occurrence.

Despite being familiar with the recommended brands and having dermatologists suggest the same products in the past, I still found the AI-generated routine to be lengthy and confusing. One of the advantages of seeing a reputable dermatologist is learning what products are unnecessary for your specific skin type. Additionally, certain types of wrinkles can only be effectively treated through in-office procedures like Botox or lasers, which AI cannot assess at this stage.

If I were to follow all the costly recommendations from ChatGPT, I would spend over $267 and commit to a complex regimen that may not provide the desired results. Applying numerous creams without proper guidance could potentially damage my skin barrier. While I acknowledge that ChatGPT can be useful in quickly finding specific skincare products, especially considering the popularity among dermatologists and social media users, I believe that more complex skincare routines should be left to the professionals.

In conclusion, AI has made significant advancements in various fields, including skincare, but there are still limitations to its capabilities. The personalized advice I received from ChatGPT was overwhelming and lacked the necessary specificity and guidance provided by dermatologists. While AI can be a helpful tool for certain aspects of skincare, it cannot replace professional expertise. For those with specific skin concerns, it is best to seek the advice of dermatologists who can provide tailored recommendations and assess the need for in-office procedures.

Editor Notes:
In my exploration of using AI for personalized skincare routines, I found that while ChatGPT can offer a wide range of product recommendations, it falls short in providing clear instructions and guidance. The experience reinforced the importance of expert advice and individualized skincare plans. As AI continues to evolve, it’s crucial to remember that it should complement and enhance professional insights rather than replace them.
