TVB News | 01/05/23 Top Story: A primary school uses ChatGPT to analyze students’ English performance, but the principal says it cannot replace teachers’ assessment of progress.

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot program, is being used in some primary schools to analyze student English performance in reading and writing. However, ChatGPT’s capabilities do not replace a teacher’s role in evaluating learning progress and changes, according to school principals. Despite the program’s advantages such as correcting students’ compositions, giving commentaries, and assessing pronunciation, teachers can understand students’ abilities much better than an AI. For example, ChatGPT’s evaluation might be based on words that a student cannot grasp. Furthermore, AI may be more appropriate for academically advanced students rather than those with weaker abilities.

ChatGPT’s mainstream application is currently in English language learning, as the system’s database mainly consists of the English language. However, its Chinese language accuracy still requires improvement. According to some primary school English language teachers, ChatGPT is not suitable for every student’s learning style as it cannot replace a teacher’s personal touch of interaction, guidance, and feedbacks, which are crucial for learning growth and progress. One school’s fifth-grader commented that the program helps him improve his vocabulary because he learned other descriptive words like “excited” and “joyful” when it corrects him. However, some teachers believe students may be unable to understand these advanced words, and also queries if ChatGPT is too advanced for some children.

While AI can pass on knowledge, it cannot replace a human teacher’s ability to deal with individual students’ specific needs and capacities. For example, if a pupil asks someone else to do their homework, a responsible teacher can quickly locate the issue and persuade the student to put in more effort. Therefore, AI systems like ChatGPT are primarily additional tools that can help streamline the learning process, but are not designed to replace human teachers entirely.

Overall, using software like ChatGPT for marking student composition, correcting language and appraisal may be useful, but it has limitations. The AI approach can determine appropriate learning speed but cannot provide the personal touch of interaction, guidance, and feedbacks which teachers can. With AI still unable to replace human skills, it leads us to wonder what the future of learning holds.

Editor Notes:

The digital age has made life more convenient in many aspects, and chatbot programs like ChatGPT are significant advancements in education. However, it is important to realize that computers are merely tools, and teachers are still the ones responsible for shaping tomorrow’s future. While AI systems like ChatGPT have great potential in teaching, human teachers are necessary for the personal touch that only they can offer in educating children.
