A Breakdown of OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Other AI Model Updates
OpenAI LP has officially released its highly anticipated GPT-4 language model, making it available through a cloud-based API. This marks the next milestone for the well-funded artificial intelligence startup, which has also revealed several other updates to its range of AI models. Alongside GPT-4, OpenAI is making three other AI models’ APIs accessible to developers. Additionally, the company plans to phase out older neural networks in the near future.
The Evolution of OpenAI’s Language Models
Introduced in March as the successor to GPT-3, GPT-4 boasts various improvements that enhance user experience. The newest model displays improved interpretation of user instructions, has the capability to process images as input, and features enhanced reasoning abilities. These upgrades enable GPT-4 to perform complex tasks more efficiently, such as solving math problems.
GPT-4 API Availability and Future Roadmap
The GPT-4 API is now accessible to all customers who have previously purchased access to OpenAI’s APIs. The startup plans to expand access to new developers later this month and intends to increase usage limits in the future. Moreover, OpenAI has disclosed its long-term plans to introduce a fine-tuning capability, allowing developers to train GPT-4 on custom datasets to enhance its accuracy.
Other OpenAI Models and APIs
In addition to GPT-4, OpenAI has made three other APIs available today. GPT-3.5 Turbo, a predecessor to GPT-4, offers more limited capabilities at a lower cost. OpenAI is also opening access to the APIs of its DALL-E and Whisper models, which are optimized for image generation and speech transcription respectively.
Transitioning from Older Language Models
OpenAI has announced its plans to discontinue several of its earlier language models sold through APIs, with an offline date set for January 4, 2024. While some affected models will be automatically upgraded to newer OpenAI products, others will require manual switching by developers. These changes are related to an update to OpenAI’s API technology earlier this year.
The Chat Completions API and Improved Security
OpenAI has shifted its development efforts towards the Chat Completions API, a newer programming interface that offers structured prompts for improved results. Notably, this API includes mitigations against prompt injection attacks, enhancing the security of OpenAI-powered machine learning applications.
