National Catholic Register: The Church’s Approach to Engaging with Emerging Artificial Intelligence Technologies

The March 2023 launch of GPT-4, the latest AI chatbot by OpenAI, has caused both excitement and concern. This advanced AI system, known as ChatGPT-4, has the ability to converse and write like a human, generate college-level essays on various topics, and even write and correct computer code. However, top technologists have warned about the potential risks associated with such powerful AI systems. They have called for a pause in the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 to allow time for the development of safety protocols.

In May 2023, a prominent letter emphasized the urgent need for action by government regulators and the tech sector to better understand and control the rapidly advancing field of AI. The letter expressed concerns about the development and deployment of powerful AI systems that are beyond human comprehension and control. It also called for the introduction of shared safety protocols to mitigate the risks associated with AI technology.

President Joe Biden has also acknowledged the need for safeguards to ensure the “safety” of AI advancements, particularly in relation to the potential spread of disinformation fueled by chatbots like ChatGPT-4. There are concerns that such disinformation could contribute to divisions and unrest in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.

Father Phillip Larrey, chairman of Humanity 2.0, has been actively involved in the discussion surrounding AI and the need for protective measures. As an author and logic and epistemology professor, Father Larrey has been working closely with leading AI innovators and collaborating with Vatican officials to address the ethical implications of AI through high-level conferences.

Father Larrey views Catholic teaching as a crucial framework for evaluating the promises and dangers of artificial intelligence. He emphasizes the importance of considering the accomplishments and risks of AI technology. While there are concerns about the potential negative consequences of AI, Father Larrey also recognizes its potential to benefit society, particularly in areas like healthcare and education.

When it comes to the breakthroughs in AI that have raised concerns, the algorithms powering AI systems like GPT-4 have significantly improved. These generative algorithms continue to learn and improve as they interact with users, benefiting from the vast amount of data they access. Building such powerful AI platforms requires substantial investments, with costs reaching around $1 billion. Companies like OpenAI and Google are leading the development of these platforms, with Google merging its DeepMind and Brain projects to create an even more advanced AI system. Metaverse and Amazon are also working on their own platforms. The technology and software behind these platforms have significantly advanced, paving the way for exponential growth in the field of AI.

The turning point in AI development came when engineers shifted their focus from replicating human intelligence to having algorithms perform logical calculations and statistical analysis. In this narrow sense, AI algorithms excel at conducting logical calculations, surpassing human capabilities in terms of speed, database access, precision, and accuracy. However, it’s crucial to recognize that AI platforms do not possess true human intelligence. They are tools that can enhance innovation across various fields, such as healthcare and education.

Father Larrey shares an example of how ChatGPT can be used to improve understanding in education. Instead of banning the use of AI systems like ChatGPT, he suggests exploring how they can contribute to students’ comprehension of subjects. He personally used ChatGPT to write an essay on the nature of the soul in the works of Thomas Aquinas. While the initial essay was decent but superficial, ChatGPT provided insightful quotations from Aquinas’ writings, which improved the overall essay. Father Larrey had the essay graded by an expert in medieval philosophy and achieved an A-. When he revealed that the essay was written by a computer, the professor was amazed and acknowledged the system’s capabilities. Father Larrey distinguishes this collaboration between students and AI systems like ChatGPT as different from plagiarism, as it involves the creation of something new through interaction with the AI system.

In conclusion, the advancements in AI, particularly with the introduction of ChatGPT-4, have raised concerns about the potential risks and ethical implications associated with increasingly powerful AI systems. Top technologists, including Father Phillip Larrey, have called for a pause in the development of AI systems that surpass GPT-4 to allow for the implementation of safety protocols. President Joe Biden has also recognized the need for regulations to ensure the secure and responsible use of AI technology. However, it is important to recognize the potential benefits of AI, such as its contribution to fields like healthcare and education. As long as AI is used responsibly and transparently, it can be a valuable tool for human progress.

Editor Notes:
In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence, there are valid concerns about the implications and risks associated with powerful AI systems like ChatGPT-4. It is essential for policymakers, technologists, and society as a whole to engage in open discussions about the future of AI and the development of safety measures. Implementing shared safety protocols and regulations will be crucial in harnessing the true potential of AI while mitigating potential harms.
