Research suggests generative AI is causing delays as ChatGPT app prepares to launch on Android

Great news for Android users! ChatGPT is getting ready to launch its very own app for Android devices. This exciting development comes just a couple of months after OpenAI released the iOS app for ChatGPT. Now, Android users can “pre-register” on the Google Play Store and receive a notification as soon as the app becomes available.

Although OpenAI has not provided a specific launch date yet, reports suggest that the app will first be released for Android users in the United States, followed by other countries.

What’s New on the ChatGPT App?

While mobile users can still access ChatGPT through the web browser, having a dedicated app will greatly enhance the user experience. The Android version of the ChatGPT app is expected to have a similar look and feel to the iOS app, with some differences in voice assistance capabilities. Additionally, the app will offer most of the features available on the web-based ChatGPT, including the ability to sync conversations across multiple devices. Based on the popularity of the iOS app, we can anticipate that the Android version will achieve at least half a million downloads within its first week of availability. According to a recent study conducted by researchers at Stanford and UC Berkeley, the latest version of ChatGPT appears to be less intelligent, slower, and less accurate compared to previous iterations. The researchers evaluated various versions of ChatGPT during the period from March to June 2023, focusing on four key tasks: solving math problems, answering sensitive questions, visual reasoning, and generating code. Surprisingly, they discovered that in March, ChatGPT-4 achieved a remarkable 97.6% accuracy in identifying prime numbers. However, by June, it drastically declined and only answered 12 questions correctly, resulting in a woefully low accuracy rate of 2.4%.

Some Twitter users have speculated that ChatGPT’s decline in performance could be attributed to OpenAI’s cost-cutting measures. It is possible that the company is not deploying its most advanced language models to the public. However, there are also conflicting studies that suggest ChatGPT can rival the intelligence of the top 1%.

This finding comes from researchers at the University of Montana who evaluated ChatGPT’s performance using the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking—a widely-used assessment for measuring creativity.
