GPT AI Language Model Showcases Analogical Thinking Proficiency

GPT-3 Language Model Outperforms Students in Cognitive Tests, Finds UCLA Study

A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has revealed that the massive language model known as GPT-3 demonstrates the ability to engage in analog thinking, a crucial aspect of human cognition. Published in the journal “Nature Human Behaviour,” the study aimed to evaluate artificial intelligence’s capacity to solve unfamiliar tasks and problems.

Headed by Taylor Webb, a brain and AI researcher, the UCLA research team organized two rounds of tests involving approximately 50 students from the university. These tasks were specifically designed for the study and were not included in the AI’s training data. The tests resembled those found in university entrance exams and intelligence tests, with a focus on analogical reasoning.

GPT-3’s Superior Performance

  • In the first task block, GPT-3 showcased superior performance over the students in solving progressive matrices. It accurately identified the missing parts from a given set of possibilities.
  • During the second task block, both the AI and the participants had to generate letter sequences, and GPT-3 once again outperformed the students.
  • The third task block required the competitors to draw analogies from short stories in order to identify the causal connections between them. While the students excelled in this area, GPT-3 struggled slightly but still performed at a commendable level.

GPT-3 consistently outperformed the students in the first three tasks. Specifically, the language model achieved an 80 percent accuracy rate in solving matrices, while the human participants achieved just under 60 percent. Although the AI’s lead in letter and word sequences was smaller, it remained statistically significant.

However, when it came to drawing causal analogies from stories, the students fared better, achieving a success rate of over 80 percent compared to GPT-3’s approximate 70 percent. The AI had more difficulty relating complex stories to others unless explicitly prompted.

The researchers observed that GPT-3 has developed an abstract understanding of succession, which mirrors the prevalence of analogies in human language. While the findings are impressive, the study underscores the limitations of the system. GPT-3 occasionally struggled to determine effective problem-solving approaches without external prompting.

According to Taylor Webb, the lead researcher of the study, the system is still far from perfect and fails at tasks that humans find relatively simple. However, the team’s preliminary tests with GPT-4 show notable improvements in performance, raising hope for further advancements in the field.
