What’s the Plan?
Shedding Light on the News
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, recently made an announcement regarding its acquisition of Global Illumination, a small “digital product company.” The highlight of this acquisition is Global Illumination’s open-source video game, “Biomes,” which bears strong resemblance to the popular game “Minecraft.”
OpenAI expressed its excitement on the company’s official blog, stating that the entire Global Illumination team has joined OpenAI and will contribute to the development of core products, including ChatGPT. OpenAI also commended Global Illumination for its use of AI in building creative tools, infrastructure, and digital experiences.
One of the co-founders of Global Illumination, Thomas Dimson, gained significance as the author of Instagram’s content ranking algorithm. His involvement adds to the anticipation surrounding this acquisition.
Uncertain Objectives
OpenAI’s motivations behind this acquisition remain somewhat unclear. Considering its existing partnership with Microsoft, the owner of “Minecraft,” it seems strange for OpenAI to acquire a company solely for its “Minecraft” clone, especially since it is open source.
However, there might be more to this story. It is possible that OpenAI aims to enhance the intelligence of AI models like GPT-4 by training them in simulated 3D environments resembling real life, such as Minecraft, as demonstrated by other AI researchers recently. Alternatively, OpenAI may be considering the development of a game infused with some form of AI to explore new revenue streams or generate hype.
If OpenAI is not venturing into the gaming industry, it has certainly acquired a talented team. However, from a skeptical developer’s perspective, its technology may be better suited for use in open-world video games and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) that involve interactive non-player characters (NPCs).
Currently, only a few AAA game developers have embraced this technology. Ubisoft stands out as one exception, experimenting with an in-house generative AI tool that aids in writing video game dialogue. However, this tool merely assists human writers instead of generating NPC lines independently.
With this recent move, OpenAI may be capitalizing on the potential of generative AI within the gaming industry. However, it is important to note that these assumptions are purely speculative at this stage.
