Why I’m Certain We Are Ready to Tackle the A.I. Challenge After Over 25 Years in the Semiconductor Industry

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Our Everyday Devices

We are on the brink of a future where artificial intelligence (A.I.) will permeate every aspect of our lives. This prospect is both thrilling and challenging, as it entails significant computing demands and raises concerns about security and privacy. However, to overcome these obstacles, we must recognize that the path to A.I. at scale lies within our everyday devices.

Throughout the past few decades, our laptops, phones, and other devices have served as the bridge between transformative technologies and the trust and reliance of people. Once again, our devices are positioned to undergo a profound transformation, but this time, with even greater impact: A.I. will reshape and revolutionize our digital experiences.

While A.I. in the cloud is impressive and here to stay, it is not without its limitations. Issues such as latency, security vulnerabilities, and high costs are challenges that can be effectively addressed by running A.I. locally. By embedding A.I. directly into the applications we regularly use, we can tap into its potential without compromising on performance or convenience.

However, for A.I. applications to flourish, it is crucial that our PCs, phones, and devices are A.I.-ready. This necessitates the design of computing engines such as central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) to accommodate complex A.I. workloads. Additionally, the development of dedicated A.I. engines like neural processing units (NPUs) is essential. It is important to note that we are only at the beginning of a continuous feedback loop in which improved A.I. hardware drives advancements in A.I. software, which then fuels further progress in A.I. hardware.

Putting People’s Needs First: The Key to Innovation

The foundation of impactful innovation lies in addressing people’s daily needs. We can look back at previous technological advancements, such as the proliferation of Wi-Fi and the rise of videoconferencing, to understand how meaningful applications that align with people’s lives fuel widespread adoption and further progress. A.I. integration into collaboration experiences on Windows is just the beginning. In the near future, A.I. will be seamlessly integrated into numerous applications, enhancing and elevating our work, creativity, and collaboration.

Embracing Challenges: The Path to Solutions

In order to achieve optimal results, it is imperative that we candidly acknowledge and discuss the challenges we face. Only by doing so can we identify and implement effective solutions that address customer needs and drive progress at every level. When it comes to A.I., two core barriers are performance and security. The increasing size of A.I. models, such as the exponential growth from GPT-2 to GPT-3, places tremendous computational demands on applications. To ensure fast, efficient, and smooth experiences, hardware specifically designed for A.I. is essential. Additionally, robust hardware-based security measures are necessary to safeguard the data and intellectual property processed by A.I. systems.

Collaboration: The Key to Success

The creation of world-changing technology requires an open ecosystem that fosters collaboration. Successful innovations are most often the result of placing cutting-edge technologies in the hands of manufacturers and developers. Gaming serves as a prime example of this collaborative process, where powerful CPUs and GPUs in gaming laptops enable developers to create visually immersive gaming experiences. Similarly, ensuring secure and seamless A.I. integration demands collaboration across every layer of the technology stack. This includes scaling hardware and operating systems, providing developer tools, and enabling manufacturers and partners to deliver new A.I.-enabled features and applications. Only through industry-wide collaboration can we propel A.I. forward at scale, ushering in a new era of possibilities.

The promise of A.I. is real, but so are the challenges. The semiconductor industry, with its history of spearheading technological shifts, plays a vital role in designing and scaling solutions for the A.I. revolution. By acknowledging and resolving practical challenges, embracing interdisciplinary collaboration, and working towards a shared vision of how A.I. can best serve people’s needs, we can confidently rise to the challenge.
