OpenAI’s ChatGPT Regains Web Browsing Capability Through Integration with Microsoft Bing
OpenAI LP announced today that its powerful chatbot, ChatGPT, has regained access to the internet to “provide you with current and authoritative information, complete with direct links to sources.” This new capability has been made possible through an integration with Microsoft Corp.’s Bing search engine. Previously, ChatGPT was restricted to surfing the web as it was up to September 2021, but now subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT enterprise users can take advantage of web browsing.
ChatGPT’s Ability to Access the Internet
ChatGPT, powered by generative artificial intelligence technology, briefly gained internet access earlier this year when OpenAI unveiled third-party plugins. These plugins included a Code Interpreter that allowed users to upload files, as well as Browsing, which provided access to the up-to-date internet using the Bing API. However, OpenAI had to remove the Browsing plugin shortly after its launch due to concerns that it was being used to bypass paywalls on various websites.
Now, ChatGPT’s internet browsing capability has made a comeback, with OpenAI ensuring that it complies with website owners’ “robots.txt” code, which prevents search engine crawlers from indexing subscription-only content.
Bing Chat: A Powerful Alternative
In addition to ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing Chat feature is also capable of accessing the internet and providing current information. Bing Chat is powered by an OpenAI model that is said to be even more powerful than GPT-4. This web browsing capability is the second major change to ChatGPT this week. Just two days ago, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT can now analyze images and hold audio conversations. Users can upload images, ask ChatGPT about the problems with them, and request suggestions for fixes. The audio capabilities allow for natural conversations, similar to interactions with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.
Moreover, OpenAI’s latest image generating model, DALL-E 3, can take advantage of ChatGPT’s conversational abilities, creating new and exciting possibilities.
