The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is excited to introduce its latest online course titled “How to Utilize ChatGPT and Other Generative AI Tools in Your Newsrooms.” This comprehensive course aims to demystify AI and provide an understanding of its fundamental principles, how it can be integrated into newsrooms, and the ethical considerations surrounding its use.

The MOOC will be led by expert instructors Aimee Rinehart and Sil Hamilton, along with assistant instructors Mariana Alvarado and Pedro Burgos for the Spanish and Portuguese versions, respectively. Aimee Rinehart, the senior product manager of AI strategy for the Associated Press’ Local News AI initiative, emphasizes the importance of embracing generative AI early on. She points out its various benefits for journalists, such as transcription, data organization, newsletter production, and social media scheduling. The scalability of generative AI tools enables journalists to broaden their coverage and expand their reach.
From September 25 to October 22, 2023, instructors will guide students through the different types of AI applicable to news operations, the implementation process, and predictions for the future of the technology and industry. Hamilton assures participants that they will gain a thorough understanding of how AI can meaningfully enhance their workflows, with incredible potential for immediate implementation. The course is designed to accommodate participants’ schedules, allowing them to log in and complete activities at their convenience within the four-week period. To encourage interactive learning, live office hours with the instructors will be held. While attendance is optional, it is highly recommended. In this module, we’ll examine the prominent AI companies today and their future direction. It also delves into the ethical considerations associated with AI, shedding light on potential warning signs in AI advertising.
Module 4: AI in Newsgathering, Production, Distribution, and Ethics
The final module reviews AI’s role in news processes, such as newsgathering, production, distribution, and the business aspects. Ethical considerations for procurement and use will also be covered. The course concludes with a discussion on the journalism industry’s role in shaping AI’s future.
In addition to the instructors’ lessons, several industry experts will join in brief conversations, providing further valuable insights. Topics covered will include international tool availability and technology company preferences. As Rinehart notes, journalists have a unique opportunity to contribute to the improvement of this technology and should pay attention to its emergence.
