Nvidia Strengthens India AI Investment with Reliance and Tata Partnerships

**Nvidia Announces AI Partnerships with Reliance Industries and Tata Group for Cloud Infrastructure and Language Models**

Nvidia, the U.S. chip firm, has made significant strides in expanding its AI presence in India through partnerships with Reliance Industries and Tata Group. These collaborations aim to develop cloud infrastructure, language models, and generative applications within the country’s growing AI ecosystem. As Nvidia faces export restrictions to China and other nations due to U.S. regulations, these partnerships will help the company establish a foothold in the South Asian market.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the potential of the AI sector in India. This meeting took place just prior to the G20 summit in New Delhi, which included the attendance of U.S. President Joe Biden and other world leaders. The discussions with Prime Minister Modi indicate the importance of India’s AI advancements on the global stage.

In collaboration with Reliance Industries, Nvidia will provide the necessary computing power to build a cloud AI infrastructure platform. Reliance’s subsidiary, Jio, will manage and maintain the infrastructure while overseeing customer engagement. Reliance aims to create AI applications and services for its 450 million Jio telecom customers, as well as provide energy-efficient AI infrastructure to scientists, developers, and startups across India.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s top software services exporter, will utilize Nvidia’s partnership to develop and process generative AI apps and a supercomputer. The collaboration will also involve upskilling TCS’s workforce of over 600,000 employees. Additionally, the partnership will drive AI-led transformations across various Tata Group companies spanning manufacturing to consumer businesses.

Nvidia is globally renowned for its dominance in computing systems used to power applications like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular generative AI chatbot. Such applications utilize large language models to provide human-like responses. This partnership will grant Reliance access to Nvidia’s Grace Hopper Superchip, a state-of-the-art AI chip optimized for AI inference functions, which are essential for apps like ChatGPT.

Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani, considered Asia’s wealthiest individual, has emphasized the necessity of developing a robust digital infrastructure in India capable of meeting the computational demands of AI. The Nvidia partnership will accelerate numerous AI projects in India, including chatbots, drug discovery, and climate research.

Neil Shah, a partner at Counterpoint Research, notes that this AI-focused initiative is crucial for Jio to unlock the value of the vast amount of data it possesses and transition into a tech company offering services beyond telecommunications. The AI infrastructure will enable accurate recommendations and cross-selling opportunities across Jio’s extensive network of clients in retail, telecom, and finance sectors.

In addition to these partnerships, Reliance is reportedly exploring the potential of semiconductor manufacturing in India, as per Reuters’ exclusive report on Friday.
