The Environmental Impact of AI: Water Consumption in Data Centers
In a preliminary study conducted by researchers from the University of California, it has been revealed that the growing popularity of AI comes with a significant environmental impact. According to the Associated Press (AP), as few as five ChatGPT queries can consume up to 500 milliliters of water at Microsoft’s Iowa data center. This study also takes into account the indirect water usage from other sources associated with the data center, such as the power plant that provides its energy.

Calculations show that the data center consumes approximately half a liter of water per every 5 to 50 ChatGPT queries. Various factors, including server location and weather, can affect water consumption, as some server cooling methods require water.

The researchers acknowledge that the situation could be worse. The data center’s location in Iowa benefits from cool weather for much of the year, allowing natural air venting to cool the servers. The facility only needs to rely on mains water when the temperature exceeds 29.3 degrees Celsius (about 85 degrees Fahrenheit).
Concerns and Future Considerations
Figures for July 2022 indicate significant water consumption during the summer period, with Microsoft’s Iowa data centers using approximately 11.5 million gallons of water. This amounts to around 6% of all water consumed in the West Des Moines district. A letter seen by AP raises concerns from the water company and city government regarding Microsoft’s peak summer water usage. Without improved technology to significantly reduce their water consumption during peak periods, further data centers may not be approved.
Google and its AI projects, including the chat-based Bard AI tool, also contribute to the water consumption issue. The researchers found that Google’s water usage across all its US data centers increased by 30% during the same period (2021-2022). This increase is primarily attributed to the surge in demand for AI processing. Notably, while Google’s water consumption in Oregon has not increased significantly, its data centers near Las Vegas experienced a doubling of water usage, with the Iowa facilities being the most water-intensive.
