The Whoop Fitness Tracker Introduces AI Coach for Personalized Health and Fitness Coaching
The fitness and heart-rate tracking wrist-based wearable maker, Whoop, has announced the integration of an artificial intelligence coach into its app. Using GPT-4, the generative AI system from ChatGPT maker OpenAI, the new Whoop Coach feature provides personalized on-demand health and fitness coaching to its users.
The Whoop device is an optical heart rate sensor that measures various metrics like heart rate, heart rate variability, and skin temperature. It collects this data and analyzes it using its accompanying app to offer insights into the wearer’s health, training, sleep, and more. The device assigns scores for “strain” and “recovery” based on this data.
Personalized Coaching Based on Scores
The Whoop Coach feature utilizes these scores to help users understand their responses to different activities. For example, it can show how recovery scores decrease during illness or after a night of heavy drinking. On the other hand, it can reveal how strain scores increase after engaging in unfamiliar exercise activities.
Previously, the Whoop device has served as an analysis tool, with any action required to be initiated by the wearer or a real-life coach. However, with the integration of AI-based recommendations from OpenAI, users can now ask questions, seek personalized advice, and receive conversational responses through the app.
Asking Questions and Seeking Guidance
According to Whoop, users can ask their Coach a range of questions. For instance, they can request a personalized training plan for a specific event, such as a 5km run with a target pace of 24 minutes. The Coach can also guide users on maintaining fitness during life changes, like having a newborn baby.
The AI Coach can even address more existential questions, such as “why am I so tired?” or “am I getting sick?”. This allows users to gain valuable insights and recommendations to optimize their health and performance.
Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, said, “Integrating AI into the health and personal performance space can enable even more value from wearable technology. WHOOP Coach is an exciting application of GPT-4, and we’re eager to learn from WHOOP members on how our models are helping to unlock human performance.”
In December 2022, the AI chatbot ChatGPT gained attention for its ability to field questions on various topics effectively. Since then, it has achieved remarkable feats, such as passing school exams and writing professional code.
The Rise of AI in Coaching and Performance Tracking
Artificial Intelligence has already begun to revolutionize cycling coaching. For example, the Spoked AI cycling coaching service combines AI algorithms with hands-on coaching for a comprehensive approach. Similarly, TrainerRoad integrates machine learning into its indoor cycling app to automatically adjust workout progressions based on feedback and recent performance.
Additional Benefits of Whoop Coach
Beyond coaching recommendations, the new Coach feature also aims to enhance users’ understanding of key scientific concepts related to health and fitness. For example, users can ask questions like “what is HRV?” to gain insights into important metrics.
The Coach can also facilitate performance comparison with others. Users may inquire about how their sleep compares to individuals of a similar age, providing valuable contextual information.
Moreover, the Coach will serve as a customer support chatbot, enabling members to troubleshoot any device or account-related issues they may encounter.
Editor Notes
Whoop’s integration of an AI coach into its fitness tracking app is a significant move towards personalized health and fitness coaching. By leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4, Whoop is able to provide tailored insights and recommendations to users based on their individual data. This integration opens up new possibilities for optimizing performance and achieving personal goals.
