Baidu has officially launched Ernie Bot, the Chinese response to ChatGPT, which is currently the only artificial intelligence tool available for the domestic market. Alongside Ernie Bot, Baidu is preparing to release a series of new AI applications that will allow users to fully experience the four fundamental capabilities of generative artificial intelligence: understanding, production, reasoning, and memory, in addition to company-related features.
This AI race was initiated by the Californian startup, OpenAI, in November 2022 with the introduction of ChatGPT, a conversational system or “chatbot” capable of generating detailed responses within seconds on an infinite range of topics. While ChatGPT has gained immense popularity in China, the interface is currently blocked.
Baidu became the first company in China to announce that they were working on a local equivalent of ChatGPT, which was presented in March. However, initially, the beta version of the tool was only available in limited capacity, in Mandarin and a few Chinese dialects. Other prominent players in the Chinese internet and e-commerce industry, such as Tencent and Alibaba, have also announced their efforts in developing similar technologies.
