Yonglin Foundation recently organized an AI Forum called “Redefining Tomorrow: The AI Revolution,” where various industry experts shared their insights. Among the distinguished speakers was Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. Altman’s speech at the forum focused on the future of OpenAI and his unwavering optimism. He expressed his commitment to continually improving ChatGPT and addressing the risks associated with AI. Let’s delve into the details as reported by FTV reporter Stephany Yang.
Sam Altman, who has made his third visit to Taiwan, took the opportunity to speak at an AI forum in Taipei. Despite the skepticism surrounding AI in the public domain, Altman remains optimistic and believes in the immense potential of OpenAI, especially in the fields of education and health care.
Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, emphasized the need for regulation but specified that it should primarily target the most powerful AI systems. He advocated for allowing small models and open-source initiatives to thrive without unnecessary interference. According to him, regulations should be focused on models that are significantly more powerful than GPT-4 and possess capabilities comparable to human intelligence. Although Altman expected this view to be well-received, he faced criticism from the tech industry, which often has a reflexive aversion to regulation. However, he reminded everyone that regulation, although not perfect, can bring about positive outcomes. He expressed his enthusiasm for various sectors, particularly education, health care, and personal productivity tools that have witnessed remarkable advancements through coding tools.
Addressing concerns about AI’s risks such as misinformation and reinforcing biases, Altman stressed the importance of establishing boundaries and incorporating human feedback into AI systems. He acknowledged that training models solely on raw internet data often results in biased outcomes. Nonetheless, he highlighted techniques, including reinforcement learning from human feedback, that enable steering and customization of AI models. Altman emphasized the significance of empowering individuals while also defining standard behaviors.
Altman also discussed the potential of fusion or solar nuclear-powered green energy to transform the sustainability of AI. He suggested that these renewable energy sources could be harnessed to provide a safe, clean, and cost-effective power supply on a massive scale. Altman envisioned a future where the cost of intelligence aligns with the cost of energy, considering the exponentially growing demand for AI capabilities. He stated that abundant, cheap, and clean energy, particularly through fusion technology, will play a crucial role in enabling everyone worldwide to benefit from the advancements of AGI.
The forum had several experts who acknowledged the concerns surrounding AI but expressed their determination to collaboratively address and mitigate its risks.
