Shaping District Students’ Success: AI in the Classroom and its Policy Implications

Bringing Education Technology to the Classroom: The Importance of AI Integration

In the ongoing debate surrounding the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, the D.C. State Board of Education (SBOE) is taking steps to standardize the use of education technology in classrooms. Representative Brandon Best, a board member, revealed plans to host a roundtable discussion on education technology, seeking input from families, teachers, community members, and representatives from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). The goal of this roundtable is to shape policies and develop a resolution that addresses the incorporation of education technology in the District’s schools.

Best’s passion for AI integration in education stems from his prior experience in machine learning. He worked on a project similar to ChatGPT, a language model AI, which won first place in an Ebay startup challenge. His involvement in this project, along with other experiences, has convinced him of the significant impact AI can have on society. Best believes that by not embracing this technology, District students may be at a disadvantage. He emphasizes the need for academic standards and a framework to guide teachers in utilizing AI effectively and safely.

Examining the Controversy and Promise of Education Technology

The newly adopted social studies standards in the District highlight the importance of digital literacy and understanding the role of various entities, such as government, people, and corporations, in ensuring access to accurate information. The OSSE is currently in the early stages of creating an exploratory committee to study the use of AI in classroom instruction, collaborating with the SBOE on this matter.

Recently, AI tools like ChatGPT, Photomath, and Symbolab have gained popularity among high school and college students. These tools can assist with tasks such as essay writing, answering test questions, programming, and even composing music. While students appreciate the convenience and time-saving benefits, some teachers have resorted to traditional pen-and-paper assessments, assignments without wifi access, and oral presentations to discourage cheating.

Leigh Ann DeLyser, the founder-executive director of CSforAll, believes that this shift towards traditional methods may slow down the impact of AI and create space for policymakers to standardize its use. According to a survey conducted by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and ParentsTogether, the majority of parents and teachers support the integration of technology in education. However, they also express their desire to have a say in how it is implemented in the classroom. Teachers especially emphasize the importance of involving them in discussions and decisions regarding education technology.

Sharing Personal Experiences: One Teacher’s Perspective

Lee James, a teacher at Eastern High School, has embraced AI integration in his classroom and will be speaking before the SBOE to share his experiences. James, who teaches IT, International Baccalaureate (IB), and world history courses, has successfully incorporated ChatGPT in his instruction. He introduces the tool to his students as a model for quality writing, helping them improve their own skills.

James encourages students to view ChatGPT as more than just an answer generator. Instead, he uses it to model suitable responses for various prompts. Students then practice their writing using these examples as a guide. James also fosters critical thinking by having students analyze ChatGPT-generated answers and engage in discussions on how to improve them.

While James primarily works with upperclassmen, he acknowledges the value of introducing AI to younger students. However, he stresses the importance of educating them about the limitations of AI and the potential consequences of misusing the technology. James believes that incorporating AI lessons into the curriculum not only captures students’ attention but also encourages and inspires other educators to explore new technologies in the classroom.

Editor Notes: Promoting Education Technology and AI Integration

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming various industries, and education is no exception. As we strive to prepare students for a future that heavily relies on technology, it is crucial to embrace education technology, including AI, in classrooms. The efforts of the D.C. State Board of Education to standardize the use of AI in education is a step in the right direction.

The integration of AI brings numerous benefits, from enhancing students’ learning experiences to providing new avenues for creativity and problem-solving. However, it is important to address concerns and ensure that AI is used safely, ethically, and in a way that complements traditional teaching methods.
