Time: the ultimate frontier – GenAI elevates their team of experts…

The Imminent Arrival of AGI: Are We on the Brink?

As I sat on my back patio, recovering from a bout of COVID, Succession playing on my iPad, I received a message from a close friend. The message included a chart that suggested the consensus for the arrival of general AI (AGI) was growing closer. This sparked a thought-provoking question from my friend, “Are we in our final days?” This question lingered in my mind, and before the NyQuil kicked in, I decided to explore the possibility.

From my perspective, I find it plausible that machines could achieve AGI within a few years. Human intelligence, at its core, is pattern recognition. While complex, it ultimately boils down to identifying patterns in sensory data and making predictions based on those patterns. Machines operate in a similar manner, albeit with guidance from their human counterparts.

The evolution of large language models (LLMs) serves as evidence for the advancement in machine intelligence. After slow progress for some time, LLMs suddenly reached a breakthrough with the introduction of more parameters. This allowed the models to store complex language patterns in a capacity comparable to that of a human. A similar trend is occurring in other modalities, such as images and speech. As machines become proficient within individual modalities, the combination of multi-modal training data could lead us closer to AGI.

However, suppose 2027 passes without any signs of nearing AGI. In that case, there may be additional barriers that hinder its development. One potential obstacle that often goes unnoticed is the lack of emphasis on temporal data. Experience plays a vital role in human learning, and it is through the accumulation of temporal data that we acquire knowledge.

In the realm of AI research, we may not be fully harnessing the power of temporal data. While temporal data exists within each modality, current training datasets often lack temporal data across modalities. This oversight could be the missing key to achieving AGI. Encoding temporal patterns across modalities presents a significant computational challenge. Processing data with temporal dimensions is more complex than processing static data, as witnessed in the struggles faced by companies developing self-driving cars.

Despite the potential roadblocks, I believe there is still a chance of achieving AGI by 2027. The temporal data within each modality’s training sets may prove sufficient for machines to learn about the world. Even if we cannot fully comprehend it, it does not negate its existence.

However, it is essential to acknowledge that we may need to expand our resources to reach AGI. Temporal data across modalities could play a more critical role than we currently realize. This could mean waiting decades for the necessary computing power and data. It might even necessitate the creation of multimodal representations of our world within virtual environments, allowing machines to learn similarly to humans.

If this prospect seems far-fetched, consider Apple’s recent announcement of the Vision Pro. The convergence of virtual environments and multimodal representations is on the horizon, whether we are ready for it or not.

In the end, it is futile to predict the exact arrival of AGI. Humans have a track record of failing to predict exponential progress accurately. Just look at the unpredictability of events like the COVID pandemic. Life becomes more enjoyable when we release our concerns about things beyond our control.
