AI-Powered Digital Map to Boost Tourism in Nagoya City
A new AI-powered digital map has been developed to recommend tourist routes in Nagoya City, which is often dubbed as having the “lowest appeal” in terms of tourism.
The Nagoya Tourism Convention Bureau has introduced a new website to showcase tourist spots in the city, utilizing advanced AI technology to analyze the user’s age, number of companions, and various preferences in order to suggest the best tourist routes in Nagoya.
The digital map, available for free on smartphones and tablets, is expected to replace the traditional paper maps distributed by tourist information centers, as the demand for paper maps has declined with the prevalence of smartphone usage.
Developed by Nagoya City and startup companies, the AI-powered digital map will offer almost twice the information found in the traditional paper maps, and is set to completely replace them by March next year.
Implemented in response to the decreased demand for paper maps, the digital map uses AI to suggest routes tailored to the user’s preferences. The new map has already received positive feedback from users, with many expressing surprise at discovering new places in Nagoya.
For example, the digital map recommended a visit to “Tatsuya,” a confectionery shop in Nagoya West District, showcasing over 300 varieties of confectionery, including rare “dagashi” items that are hard to find elsewhere.
The AI’s recommendations also include popular tourist destinations such as Nagoya Castle, which have been positively received by both local residents and visiting tourists.
By integrating advanced AI technology into the tourism experience, Nagoya City hopes to revitalize its appeal and attract more visitors who can benefit from tailored, personalized travel experiences in the city.
