OpenAI and Google mandated to report AI model details to government

New Government Requirement for AI Companies Revealed

AI companies like OpenAI and Google will now have to inform the government about their development of foundation models, thanks to the Defense Production Act. This requirement was disclosed by US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo last Friday at an event held by Stanford University’s Hoover Institute.

President Biden’s sweeping AI executive order announced last October includes this new rule, which mandates companies to notify the federal government and share safety testing results for any foundation model that poses a serious risk to national security, economic security, or public health and safety.

The concern is mainly around future foundation models with unprecedented computing power, as they could present massive national security risks. The Defense Production Act, last used in 2021 to increase pandemic-related protective equipment production, has been invoked to address this issue.

Additionally, US cloud computing providers will have to disclose foreign use of their services, according to another aspect of the executive order.

The deadline for compliance with these requirements is today, Jan. 28. It is expected that more details about the implementation will be revealed soon.
