OpenAI’s Response to Congressional Black Caucus Regarding the Board’s Lack of Diversity

OpenAI Responds to Congressional Black Caucus Concerns About Lack of Diversity on Board

OpenAI has addressed a letter from the Congressional Black Caucus expressing concerns about the lack of diversity on its board.

The response letter, dated January 5 and signed by CEO Sam Altman and Chairman of the Board Bret Taylor, stated that building a diverse board is a top priority and the company is working with an executive search firm to assist in finding talent.

In mid-December, CBC Chairs Rep. Emanuel Cleaver and Rep. Barbara Lee urged OpenAI to “move expeditiously” in diversifying its board, emphasizing the importance of including a Black perspective in building machine learning tools to mitigate AI bias.

The CBC letter also included specific questions to OpenAI about its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals for the board and how it ensures consideration of women and people of color for board roles.

OpenAI’s response did not directly address the request for Black voices on the board, but noted its ongoing work to diversify the board and its commitment to addressing harmful AI biases.

While Rep. Cleaver appreciated the response, he felt that it lacked concrete plans for diversifying the board. He plans to present the letter to the rest of the CBC and gather their thoughts on OpenAI’s response.

The CBC also sent a letter to the Department of Labor, asking it to investigate whether ongoing tech layoffs disproportionately affect the Black community.

Overall, OpenAI’s response to concerns about diversity on its board has raised questions and the company’s efforts to address them will be closely watched.
