Teachers at Berkeley High School Adapt to Address Academic Integrity Concerns with the Rise of ChatGPT
Since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has become much more easily accessible to students. This has raised concerns about academic integrity and plagiarism among teachers.
Computer science teacher Peter Seibel presented to BHS staff about the relevance of ChatGPT at BHS and how teachers should address it. He emphasized the importance of building trust with students to address the issue and noted that the tone and sophistication of the work can be indicators of AI use.
English teacher Brooke McKinney explained that she sets clear expectations for her students regarding the use of AI, with a low tolerance policy for ChatGPT. She also recognized that ChatGPT can be a helpful resource for students when used correctly.
Another English teacher, Amanda Daly, mentioned that she doesn’t face many conflicts concerning ChatGPT, but when it occurs, she treats it as any other form of plagiarism.
