Introducing Meet Time-LLM: A Framework for Reprogramming Language Models for Time Series Forecasting while Preserving Backbone Language Models

Introducing TIME-LLM: A Groundbreaking Framework for Time Series Forecasting

TIME-LLM is revolutionizing time series forecasting by leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) in a novel way. Developed by a collaboration between Monash University and Ant Group, this framework redefines traditional forecasting methods by harnessing the power of LLMs. Unlike specialized models, TIME-LLM offers a versatile and efficient solution that doesn’t require extensive domain knowledge or copious amounts of data.

The innovative Prompt-as-Prefix (PaP) technique at the core of TIME-LLM translates time series data into text prototypes, bridging the gap between numerical and textual understanding. This approach allows LLMs to accurately interpret and forecast time series data without the need for domain-specific data. By segmenting the input time series into discrete patches and applying learned text prototypes, TIME-LLM effectively utilizes the knowledge embedded in LLMs for precise predictions.

Empirical evaluations have shown that TIME-LLM outperforms existing models in both few-shot and zero-shot learning scenarios, showcasing its adaptability, efficiency, and superiority in forecasting diverse time series data. Furthermore, this research opens up new possibilities for repurposing LLMs in data analysis and beyond, heralding a significant leap forward in the field.
