GPT Chat Designed a Diet Plan for Me That Includes Eating Significantly Less.

Nutrition Experts Beware: ChatGPT AI Meal Plans Are Going Viral on TikTok

As a writer, I understand the fear of being replaced by AI-generated content. However, the dystopian future of losing jobs to robots is already here, and nutrition professionals are not immune. ChatGPT meal plans, an artificial intelligence chatbot, are going viral on TikTok, with users using AI to replicate advice given by health experts. With the overwhelming and often contradictory nutrition advice on the internet, access to a dietician can be difficult, and private clinics for in-person appointments are expensive. The prospect of a free and instantly available meal plan offered by ChatGPT becomes alluring.

However, AI-generated nutrition advice claiming to be quick, free, and simple often falls short and can be dangerous. To test ChatGPT’s meal plan quality, I created an Open AI account and asked ChatGPT to make me a weekly meal plan suitable for someone who regularly exercises, needs pre-workout snacks and desserts, is dairy-free, avoids fish, is affordable, nutritious, and good for hormones. The meals sound good, with fresh vegetables and whole grains, diversity, and two snacks a day.

However, the portion sizes are small, with breakfast consisting of just one slice of bread and a lunch recipe for chickpea salad made with under half a tin of beans. Concerned, I downloaded a calorie counting app to discover that the ChatGPT meal plan would likely come to around 1500 calories a day with 60g of protein and 145g of carbs, worryingly low for active females who are advised to eat 2200-2400 calories. Even more concerning, when I asked the chatbot to adjust the meal plan for my height and weight, it told me to reduce the portion sizes further, leading me to eat less food than before.

It is essential to emphasize that everyone’s nutritional needs are different, and it’s crucial to listen to your body and adjust your portion sizes accordingly. While AI-generated meal plans have the potential to help those who cannot afford private clinics, multiple metrics must be measured to ensure it can provide safe and reliable advice.
