UNICEF Encourages Journalists to Engage in NLP

UNICEF Tasks Journalists on NLP for Digital Learning in Nigeria

In an effort to enhance digital learning in Nigeria, UNICEF has called on Nigerian Journalists to promote the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) through their reportage. The NLP, a digital learning platform powered by Microsoft, was introduced by UNICEF in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education last year.

The call to action was made at a one-day Zonal Dialogue held at Fildema Hotel, Enugu, which brought together selected Media Executives from Enugu, Benue, and Cross River states. Dr. Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe, the Communication Officer of UNICEF Enugu Field Office, urged journalists to prioritize NLP and use their platforms to increase its uptake across the targeted states.

According to Dr. Onuoha-Ogwe, the media plays a crucial role in setting the agenda for accelerated NLP uptake. She emphasized the need for media practitioners to unite with the government and other stakeholders to take favorable actions for the development of children, while also holding them accountable.

The UNICEF Communication Officer further highlighted the role of the media in creating demand for NLP and bridging the digital learning divide in rural areas of Nigeria. She called on journalists to develop programs, write-ups, and initiatives that would encourage more Nigerians to embrace the NLP.

The Importance of Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP)

The NLP, as described by Dr. Onuoha-Ogwe, is a comprehensive digital learning platform that encompasses various aspects of education. It provides opportunities for community and parental engagement, digital and remote learning, and partnerships between private and public sectors. Additionally, it supports safe school services and caters to child education, parents and teachers’ education, vocational training, and primary and secondary school education.

Dr. Agatha Nzeribe, the Education Specialist at UNICEF Field Office in Enugu, emphasized the importance of dialogue in advancing the operational mode and reach of NLP in Nigeria. The dialogue aimed to identify media channels in Enugu, Benue, and Cross River states and involve them in strategy development to increase the adoption of NLP.

Driving NLP Enrollments in Enugu, Benue, and Cross River States

During the dialogue, media practitioners were tasked with developing action plans to achieve targeted enrollments for NLP in the three states between January and November 2023. The collaboration between the media, government, and other stakeholders was seen as essential in promoting the benefits of NLP and encouraging its adoption among the youth.

The Enugu State Universal Education Board (ENSUBEB) and the Enugu State Ministry of Education collaborated with UNICEF to organize the one-day dialogue, highlighting their commitment to advancing digital learning opportunities in the country.

Editor Notes

Ensuring access to quality education is crucial for the development of any nation. UNICEF’s efforts to enhance digital learning through initiatives like the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) are commendable. By engaging Nigerian journalists and leveraging media platforms, UNICEF aims to increase awareness and adoption of the NLP, bridging the digital learning divide in rural areas. This collaborative approach involving the government and other stakeholders is key to the success of such programs. Embracing digital learning is not only vital for children’s education but also for the growth and prosperity of Nigeria as a whole.
